An otome game is a story based video game that is targeted towards the female market. Generally one of the goals, besides the main plot goal, is to develop a romantic relationship between the female player character and one of several male or female characters.

Otome game maker Rejet is adding a mobile spin-off to its Ken ga Kimi (剣が君) franchise. The new title in development is an RPG called Ken ga Toki (剣が刻), which is jointly developed and run by Rejet and Xiimoon Shanghai Entertainment Co., Ltd..

Ken ga Toki shares a similar setting with Ken ga Kimi. The new game will still revolve around Tenga Go Ken, which means the legendary five great katana. The heroine discovers a mysterious sword and time travels to the 17th century of Japan, where the five katana are said to have the ability to defeat the evil. Due to the sword she carries, she ends up getting caught up in the conflicts between monsters, oni, and humans.

The Silent Kingdom is an upcoming otome RPG being brought to us by a single developer, and I had the wonderful opportunity to interview her about her current project. Many thanks to Lucky Cat for answering our burning questions!

Rice Digital: You established yourself with a few fangames using RPG Maker, but your more recent works have been visual novels. What was behind your decision to return to the RPG style with The Silent Kingdom?

Rice Digital: With The Silent Kingdom having a medieval/fantasy aesthetic, were there any major reasons as to why you chose that as the design choice overall? Did the character designs come first, or the setting?

Rice Digital: Congratulations on not just reaching your Kickstarter goal, but going above and beyond it! The campaign was successful enough to unlock a Nintendo Switch release. Could you tell us a little about if that was your hope for The Silent Kingdom when you first started working on it, and if there will be any challenges in approaching the game on a different platform to the Windows release?

Characters are the most important to me, so I spend a lot of time digging about their psychology, and how they fit with each other. To me, they are very much alive and work like chemicals; you place them together in the same place and observe the results. When I create them, I just think of what kind of people the world has made them to be, what thoughts and secrets they keep, and what kind of chemistry they will have with the princess.

Rice Digital: Reaching the funding goals you did allowed you to add a third romanceable character in the form of The Gladiator as DLC. You also revealed the illustration of the stunning Princess Megaera in your update journal on Kickstarter. Can we expect more character reveals soon, and will there be many more characters to meet along the bloody path of reclaiming our Silent Kingdom?

Rice Digital: The Silent Kingdom has rightfully and deservingly been receiving recognition since its first appearance on Kickstarter on other websites, blogs, YouTube videos and the like. Has seeing the widespread recognition helped you remain steadfast in going full steam ahead with fully committing to the creation and delivery of The Silent Kingdom? How have you felt with all of the coverage?

A word of caution: this game is not your average cutesy otome. Parts of it are downright scary, and I made a bad choice when I played it right before bed. At the risk of being a bit spoliery, there is blood and death. None of the scenes are amazingly gory, but one or two are relatively graphic. Aside from the actual horror and suspense, some parts of the relationships can be rather unhealthy, at least in my opinion. Although that may not seem like much in comparison to the whole death thing, I know plenty of people use otome games to escape to a fantasy world without manipulation and abuse in relationships and this sort of game is exactly what they do not want. Although there are no scenes of partial nudity, there are mentions of sex and the blood sucking scenes are heavily sexualized (earning the game its steamy tag).

Doki Doki Dollmaker is an in-development boys love (BL or BxB) visual novel. Make decisions on behalf of Lyle to steer the story in different directions and experience multiple endings. The full game is scheduled to release at the end of 2021, but you can try the demo right now to begin the story and meet the characters!

I used to play a lot of Voltage Inc. games. These games had the traditional gameplay mechanics. You tap through the storyline and choices. The money maker was paying to read the entire story of a route or additional storylines.

I only played one story on there, and the design was so pretty. This game had paid choices. You could also dress up your character and the boys, which could unlock better choices and reactions from the characters.

WANNABE CHALLENGE actually does this quite well too. The text is delivered to the reader in short sentences. Sometimes it appears in different places, depending on the context. That was a nice experience.
