GREEK EVENTS PREVIEWS
By George and Michael Gekas

E-mail: in...@greekeventspreviews.com

  Week of April 1st, 2013

Dear readers,

Last weekend the Greek Community marked Greek Independence Day with the annual parade on the Danforth.  If you missed the festivities (including sunny weather and great participation!), you can check out a video of the parade here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7hrhvLTkYQ.

The Greek America Foundation s Greek Film and Foto Week takes place next month, and like last year will feature a short film contest, aiming to encourage filmmakers to create Greek-themed and Greek-inspired short films for the wider audience. This year's contest challenged the filmmakers to make a film, 15 minutes or less, about how a stranger/foreigner's encounter with Greece or a Greek value or ideal can effectively change his/her life.  Though the winners won t be announced until they are officially screened on May 12th, you can preview the finalists now: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVBcTpng8Az22T2VrOaPsp5AWQBrraEgj&feature=view_all

Hellenic Canadian Academic Association Fundraising Dinner

The Hellenic Canadian Academic Association of Ontario (HCAAO) invites you and your guests to the annual HCAAO Get-together Dinner. This year, our Get-together Dinner is very special and wide open to the community, as it is dedicated to raising funds for humanitarian assistance to Greece. The net proceeds will be donated to the Greek chapter of the Doctors of the World (DoW).

It is well known that due to the economic crisis, thousands of people in Greece, including children, are increasingly in need of medical attention, which they are increasingly unable to get through normal channels. Naturally, this problem tends to be most acute in the large cities and most importantly in Athens. The DoW, among many other NGOs, are on the ground trying to help the best way they can. As demand for their services grows however, these organizations find themselves overstretched and increasingly in need for more financial support.

This dinner function is about raising funds to assist, in some small way, those who do the good work on the ground. It is also about raising awareness of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Greece. We wish to enlist your support in this effort.

CATCH OF THE DAY: If You Know English, You Pretty Much Know Greek too...

The proliferation of Greek in the English language is astounding.  The following text is almost entirely made of Greek words:

"The genesis of classical drama was not symptomatic. An euphoria of charismatic and talented protagonists showed fantastic scenes of historic episodes. The prologue, the theme and the epilogue comprised the trilogy of drama while synthesis, analysis and synopsis characterized the phraseology of the text. The syntax and phraseology used by scholars, academicians and philosophers in their rhetoric, had many grammatical idioms and idiosyncrasies. The protagonists periodically used pseudonyms. Anonymity was a syndrome that characterized the theatrical atmosphere. The panoramic fantasy, the mystique, the melody, the aesthetics, the use of the cosmetic epithets are characteristics of drama. Even through the theatres were physically gigantic, there was no need for microphones because the architecture and the acoustics would echo isometrically and crystal - clear.

Many epistemologists of physics, aerodynamics, acoustics, electronics, electromagnetic can not analyze - explain the ideal and isometric acoustics of Hellenic theaters even today. There were many categories of drama: classical drama, melodrama, satiric, epic, comedy, etc. The syndrome of xenophobia or dyslexia was overcome by the pathos of the actors who practiced methodically and emphatically. Acrobatics were also euphoric. There was a plethora of anecdotal themes, with which the

Acrobats would electrify the ecstatic audience with scenes from mythical and historical episodes. Some theatrics episodes were characterized as scandalous and blasphemous. Pornography, bigamy, haemophilia, nymphomania, polyandry, polygamy and heterosexuality were dramatized in a pedagogical way so the mysticism about them would not cause phobia or anathema or taken as anomaly but through logic, dialogue and analysis scepticism and the pathetic or cryptic mystery behind them would be dispelled. It is historically and chronologically proven that theater emphasized pedagogy, idealism and harmony. Paradoxically it also energized patriotism a phenomenon that symbolized ethnically character and phenomenal heroism."
