Likely best solution is for Big Giant Donut to operate a similar list, with basic rules—no nasties, unrespectful,
censorship. Apple and many other developers do. It’s our new wave, and many of us on Gib’s Helix-L are
a lot older than when we first discovered Helix.
Less good, but feasible, groups.io.  I hosted a few low-frequency groups on Yahoo, then Yahoo shut down,
shifted to groups.io, seems a decent provider.

Might BGD consider and by Groundog Day 2Feb2024 let us know.

And many thanks to Gib for loyal support, and sharing his expertise to many help requests.

The software that runs Helix-L, CommuniGate Pro, no longer supports the community version which currently runs this list, and I have not been able to find a comparable replacement.  Sadly, I will have to give up on running Helix-L.

I think I can keep it running until the end of February, but at that point I will no longer be able to operate the list.  I would be happy to turn it over to someone who has the facilities to continue it, or perhaps Big Giant Donut will continue it as a mailing list or replace it with a forum.  Cheers,

May I second this. Gib’s list has been an enormous help to me and many like me I am sure. Apart from serving future users the archive is of tremendous continuing help;

Hosting a users' forum is surely within the open and co-operative spirit of the Donut project and let’s hope they can find space for it within Helix’s new home.

Many, many thanks Gib for all you have done over the years

Thanks Gib for such tireless service over the years. It would be great if it could soldier on in another place or form but I don't expect the BGD to host it - the future doesn’t need the past clinging to its coattails and whatever socially -oriented marketing occurs will most likely support the new users of the new product range.

In the same vein, it would have been nostalgically satisfying for the Donut Maker to arrive on the same date that its progenitor was released all those 40 years ago and could thereby bask in the afterglow of the original Mac’s celebration. But no, unlike a Dr Who transition, refashioning Helix RADE is gonna take tiiiime.

History doesn’t repeat, but it does hip hop.

Hi Folks,

One of the first people I contacted when thinking about getting involved with Helix was Gib.  I wanted his thoughts on Helix and, recognizing the importance of the Mail List, said, "if I move forward will you keep the mail list going?"    At that time Gib told me that his mail list software's life was coming to an end but, he thought he could squeeze another year out of it, and here we are.

I think this list is one of the central reasons that helix survived this long.   The ability to tap the collective experience and wisdom of this wonderful group of users has been invaluable.

We are kicking around several ideas for moving forward.   Given our workload,  I suspect there will be a gap between the end of the Mail List and the implementation of our solution but, maybe not.    Gib has begun sending me Mail List archives and we are working on the best way to make that a searchable reference on the web site.    Unfortunately, a bit too much data for our current AI helper but, we will figure it out.

Once again, thank you Gib for your efforts over the years.

Dana

Hello Helix Scholars, This list is important to me and greatly appreciated, especially when not receiving regular updates from BGD.
Without this list, I would have put my tail between my legs and run off by now. I built my collection starting back in the '80s with John Alcock.
I give Helix a huge amount of credit for my business success. I want Helix to survive.
