U.S. Copyright Office Releases New Resource for Registering Non-Photographic Databases
July 28, 2022
The Copyright Office launched a new web page that provides general guidance for registering automated databases that do not primarily consist of photographs. The page includes helpful information about registering individual versions of a database as well group registration of up to three months of database updates. It also answers frequently asked questions and provides referential information for database applicants.

More information about the registration options for non-photographic databases is available on the Copyright Office’s website. <https://www.copyright.gov/non-photographic-databases/?loclr=eanco>

Daniel,

This was a very appropriate start of a new discussion thread. Effectively explaining to clients the concept of registration of copyright for a “compilation” is often difficult. Helix developers of all skill levels have a clear advantage in understanding a compilation as an “original work of authorship” because Helix development intrinsically authors “structure” which is the foundation of a compilation. The most valuable portion of the page that you referenced is the “Resources and Background” box that links to more detailed information.

Regards,

Michael
