Thank you for all the suggestions regarding replacements for Helix-L.  I’ve looked into some of them, and I’ve given a lot of thought to starting over.  Sadly, I ultimately decided not to do that.

So Thursday will be the last day for posting to the list; on Friday I will begin changing over my email system.  It’s been a real roller coaster since 1994, and I will certainly miss hearing from all of you, and the sense of community, but I feel happy that Helix, like the Phoenix, is rising again.  Cheers,

Gib Henry

NOTE: The Helix-L mailing list is an independent discussion group composed of both professional and non-professional users of Helix, the icon-driven relational database system for Macintosh, in continuous development since 1984.  Helix-L is independent of Big Giant Donut, Inc., developers of Helix.  While BGD personnel may from time to time participate in discussions, postings from BGD personnel should be considered ex-officio; any formal requests for support should be directed to Big Giant Donut. The list administrator has no connection with Big Giant Donut, Inc.

How can I thank you for your work? This is a late thought - how about making it a subscription service??? $10/mo?

I have learned so much from this group and have found it to be invaluable to my management of Helix. Without Gib having made the effort to create it in the first place, I would have received none of this benefit.

I suspect there will be a huge amount of value for us to be able to communicate going forward with this transition to Donut, so I have taken the initiative to create a temporary (or maybe permanent) group on groups.io while you can still see postings here on Gib’s group.

I have called it Helix-Donut-users and it is in the process of being approved. It should be valid within 24 hours.

If you wish to continue being able to communicate, you can sign up for it as soon as it has been approved at:

or it should be publicly visible at groups.io

If enough people sign up and want to make it permanent, then it can be so.  If one is created on the Donut site that everyone wants to migrate to, then that will be fine too.  I’m also happy to assign the administration of this to anyone who would like to take it on.

Sorry, I thought the whole chain was as below and didn’t see the overnight email offer to do a list until after I’d done this.  If this muddies the waters, then someone else go ahead and do it or I’ll assign it.  Otherwise, it's done.

I thank you as well. Hopefully this will keep going in some fashion with a new group.

Before this list goes away, I really want to try the new server, but would like to hear from anyone who has upgraded and how that worked.

Thanks

Behind the scenes we have agreed that the new group is going to work well for our purposes.

We already have 18 members who have transitioned and new sign ups are coming in every few minutes.

I encourage everyone to transition and especially those of you who have provided such great insight over the years due to your vast expertise in these areas. I know very little and would really appreciate your continued involvement.

These are going to be interesting (and maybe challenging) times and it will be important for us to share our experiences.

Regards,

Ian

Its a wondrous thing to reflect on the enduring impact of Gib’s list.

I don’t recall when it started but do know I was active on it long before my cat, Helix died - even before my first marriage ended (partly because of my obsession with Helix).

It was a time when Pam Neidermeyer(?) dispensed sensible advice even as firstly, Odesta, then unReal Provencher, then the Chip Merchant, then QSA held the reins.

It was a place where smart, experienced people like Philip Bath could offer abstruse but useful ways to do impossible things. Things missing from the scatty documentation.

A place where Lenny Eiger could quietly(!) evangelise the optimal way to do things that bypassed the gremlins in the code.

Through it all Gib’s list held the line. A lifeline that we straggly band of eccentrics, loners, erudite professionals, and hard-nosed business owners could cling to, bereft of all hope, except for the crazy one that may yet bring us home.

Thanks Gib for the years, nay decades of selfless service.

We stragglers salute you.

Lee

I remember reading and re-reading, the stubbornly working my way through
some of the things that Phillip wrote. Was not easy to understand but
like most good things was worth the effort in the end!  This list really
has been an incredible source of knowledge far beyond any documentation!
