SF Chronicle: Buena Vista Park a Forest Getaway      
buena vista Above the Haight is Buena Vista Park, San Francisco's heavily forested hill and a favorite with dog walkers. It's as old as its famous near-neighbor Golden Gate Park, and both have significant stands of coast live oak forest - a refreshing retreat from urban life.

 

Buena Vista Park started out as a sand dune with some chert outcroppings. (After a winter rain, you can see the sand slip out along pathways in the park.) In the 1880s, a few eucalyptus trees and Monterey pines were planted. John McLaren, the longtime superintendent of San Francisco's parks, was responsible for more systematic planting in the early 20th century. In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration paved a number of paths and lined gutters and retaining walls with dressed marble and granite from recently demolished local graveyards. Read more here
Sunset Community Festival This Weekend      

sunsetfest2011The Sunset Community Festival Committee is proud to announce the 17th Annual Sunset Community Festival, at the newly redesigned and remodeled West Sunset Playground and Plaza--right next door to the New Ortega Branch Library.

 

The new playground will become "Playland at the Beach" for a day and feature new, fun activities for children along with some Playland history for all to enjoy. As in previous years the festival will continue to include exhibits and entertainment that celebrate our neighborhood's successes and ensure that the greater Sunset community will continue to be a safe, family-friendly environment that is culturally, socially and economically inclusive. 

 

Join us at the Sunset Community Festival on Saturday, September 24, at West Sunset Playground, 39th and Ortega, from 11 AM to 4 PM to celebrate and share information with our community.

Girls Sports Jamboree Offers a Sampling of Six Different Sports    
girl yogaGirls, ages 5-12, get in the game at our Taster's Choice sports event on Saturday, September 24, at Kezar Pavilion (755 Stanyan Street). This multi-sport clinic is designed for girls to learn new skills in basketball, flag football, boxing, volleyball, track and yoga. Participants will rotate to each station, meeting coaches and making friends while learning the basics of each sport. Cost is $5 per youth (scholarships available). In the spirit of supporting local schools and local parents, the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center will host an elementary school fair.  Parents and administrators from public, private and parochial schools in Glen Park, Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, the Mission, Eureka Valley, the Castro, Miraloma Heights, the Market Street Corridor and the 280 Corridor will be on hand to answer questions.  Parents for Public Schools will host an enrollment workshop between 9 and 10 a.m. This nonprofit organization works closely with the San Francisco Unified School District, and its representatives know the ins and outs of the new enrollment system.  The San Francisco Public Library will have a Bookmobile on hand, and you'll be able to apply for a library card. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department will have staff available to register you for a family account, sign you up for classes and answer questions.
