A staggered shift pattern is most similar to the typical working week, as employees work five 8-hour days per week. The big difference is that not all team members will work Monday-Friday; employers stagger working days so that their business can operate every day of the week.
Rather than segmenting shift patterns by day, some companies choose to roster staff by the hour. In a two shift system, one set of employees will work for a set period each day, before another group of employees take over for a different period that day.
Companies that need to operate for long periods of time but have jobs that either require intense concentration or have restrictions on working times for health and safety reasons. For example, some manufacturing firms find the two shift system ideal for their requirements.
Businesses that benefit from shift work but who want to give staff the ability to plan ahead in their personal lives. An alternating week shift pattern may suit hotels, restaurants and leisure centres, which need staff on shift beyond the standard 9-5:30 day but can still accommodate regular working patterns.
I would actually suggest a different sheet structure, where there is only one Date Column with every date populated, and each employee has their own column to indicate which days they are on shift (versus a row).
You can hide these helper columns. They will enable you to create Change Cell Workflows for each schedule type, auto-filling in if someone is due to be on shift based on the dates in the Date column.
Then we can use the WeekNumber column (Odd or Even) to set up a workflow for someone who has an "every-other" type of shift. You can also specify a Start Date by adding it in the Condition of the workflow.
The only shift patter that is trickier is the 4 on - 4 off type of shift. In this instance, I would actually suggest just manually typing in the "On Shift" text and using drag-fill to create a pattern. If you select 4 cells that say "On Shift" and 4 that are blank, you can drag this down to continue the pattern for the whole column.

Background: Against a backdrop of increasing demand for mental health services, and difficulties in recruitment and retention of mental health staff, employers may consider implementation of 12 h shifts to reduce wage costs. Mixed evidence regarding the impact of 12 h shifts may arise because research is conducted in divergent contexts. Much existing research is cross sectional in design and evaluates impact during the honeymoon phase of implementation. Previous research has not examined the impact of 12 h shifts in mental health service settings.
Design: A qualitative approach was adopted to enable analysis of subjective employee experiences of changes to organisation contextual features arising from the shift pattern change, and to explore how this shapes wellbeing.
Results: Thematic analysis identified unintended consequences of 12 h shifts as these patterns changed roles and the delivery of care, diminishing perceptions of quality of patient care, opportunities for social support, with reports of pacing work to preserve emotional and physical stamina. These features were moderated by older age, commitment to the public healthcare sector, and fit to individual circumstances in the non-work domain leading to divergent work-life balance outcomes.
Conclusions: Findings indicate potential exists for differential wellbeing outcomes of a 12 h shift pattern and negative effects are exacerbated in a stressful and dynamic acute mental health ward context. In a tight labour market with an ageing workforce, employee flexibility and choice are key to retention and wellbeing. Compulsory 12 h shift patterns should be avoided in this setting.

Roster planning and communicating shifts to staff whose shift patterns regularly change or rotate can be a difficult and time-consuming task, often leading to understaffing and confusion for employees.
For this reason, we recommend investing in shift planning software that allows managers to create templates based on tried-and-tested shift patterns rather than creating schedules from scratch for each pay period or rotation.
