Shurtleff was the major casting director for producer David Merrick. During the casting process he would bring in to audition for the play's director such new names as Elliott Gould, Barbra Streisand, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler and Jerry Orbach.[2] Shurtleff worked with Bob Fosse on Pippin and Chicago, and Andrew Lloyd Webber on Jesus Christ Superstar.[2]

Shurtleff went on to form his own casting service, Casting Consultants, in 1962. Among the Broadway productions on which he acted as casting director were the original productions of 1776, The Apple Tree and Chicago. He served as casting director on such films as The Graduate and The Sound of Music.[2] In his book Audition, he addressed common problems for actors during the audition process, problems he had witnessed many times over in his casting sessions. The book has become somewhat of a "bible for aspiring actors."[2]

Absolutely everything an actor needs to know to get the part is here: What to do that moment before; how to use humour; how to create mystery; how to develop a distinct style; and how to evaluate the place, the relationships, and the competition. In fact, Audition is a necessary guide to dealing with all the "auditions" we face in life. This is the bible on the subject.

This book has given me a whole new way of thinking. I know I will be reviewing the many useful tips in this book before my next audition. Some of the things I read in this book I have heard/read before. Some of the things were a first to read. Either way, it was helpful to remind myself of the things I may have forgotten, and learn some new things!

I would recommend this book to any actor. It is definitely something every beginning actor should read. It is a wonderful guide as to what a beginning actor can expect at an audition and covers such topics as: who the auditors are, entering and exiting an audition, your wardrobe, standing in the light, and working on the sides. As an experienced actor, I also found it very helpful. Some of the things I found helpful were- advice on marketing yourself as an actor, putting yourself into a reading, and thinking beyond what is stated in the script. I think every actor, no matter what level or stage of their career, would benefit from having this book in their tool belt.

This episode we talk with highly successful character actor Julian Richings about his career and ask his thoughts on Chapter 4 of the acting book Audition by Michael Shurtleff #audition #JulianRitchings #acting

The book is written as practical advice for actors who want to know exactly what to do at an audition. Shurtleff, a casting director who worked on both movies and plays, gives an astounding amount of detail and this leads to some precise accounts of every day behavior which can be useful to non-actors as well. There are four sections of the book: 1) Basic, practical advice on the technicalities of the audition, 2) The twelve guideposts for actors to guide their emotions (including case studies), 3) Things actors need to know, and 4) General observations from working in theater.

I have been teaching Theatre and Advanced Theatre for a few years now and I am working on re-vamping some of my older materials. I inherited a lot from the previous teacher and I don't love it all.
I'm curious what "Units" others teach? I know there are standards and curriculum and all that, but does anyone else base their course on units? For example, with my Beginning Theatre class, I do a unit on production roles, a unit on pantomime, a unit on the audition process and the monologue. In Advanced, I do a unit on Shakespeare, a unit on Stage Combat, etc. But I need fresh ideas! What units do you all teach??

Place has to be created by the actor in an audition scenario. Doing so will help you in creating reality in your reading. Figure out where you are before you come on stage. Place all the objects that would be in the room and figure out where all the other people in the scene would be standing.

Discoveries: A scene, even an audition scene, can quickly become rote. Michael shows how to keep "making things happen for the first time" through a constant process of discovery. Communication and Competition: Getting beyond self-expression to true communication: a continuous cycle of messages and responses , energized by competition.
