Before this frustrating update, the way that I did this when there's no laptop at hand was pretty simple: send an email with your .epub file attached to your own email account and open it in Mail app. When you click the attachment, iPhone will allow you to copy the file to iBooks. This works for PDF files as well.
So, if I understand correctly, I bought an iPad a few years ago to replace my Kindle. Now I have to go and buy a Kindle to sync/maintain my book collection??!?!? I have a library of over 1400 books in my iTunes/iBooks that I can longer sync??? My iBooks app will be a monument to the last time I was able to sync my books then, I guess. Note that none of my books were purchased through iBooks, they're DRM-free epubs, so now I have nothing but an $800 internet viewing machine, I guess. Thanks, Apple!
I have to say that this so-called improvement is turning into a complete pain in the backside. It seems like a land grab to persuade people to only use Ibooks. If they did this with audio files there'd be widespread condemnation.
Also unless you are using a Mac where you can use the Mac iBooks App to add Books to iCloud Drive, there is no access to iBooks on iCloud Drive on a Windows PC. So no way to add anything to iBooks from Windows.
I'll try the drag an drop method tonight and see if it works. Thanks. I want a way to transfer into iBooks directly from the Windows PC to the iPad like it used to work. I don't use any cloud services, and I don't want to. I store my books locally and transfer direct. Hopefully that will work. I'll let you know. Thanks again for the quick response.
Thanks all, for the suggestions. I did the drag and drop to iTunes while I had my iPad plugged in and it worked. Once plugged in, I opened the Books section, and dragged the file there. It showed up in iBooks right after. It's clunky, but it works. I guess I'll have to go back to Calibre to organize my ebooks.
I was able to 'drag and drop' epub books from Windows Explorer onto my iPad. I couldn't drop them onto the Device on the left side of the iTunes screen, but had to select Books under the device and drop them onto the right side of the iTunes screen.
Okay, let me start by voicing my situation. First, I have a multitude of ebooks that I've had for years, sitting on my PC. Recently, I picked up an iPad Gen 1, 32GB for $10 used, (Which is the only reason I bought an apple product,), and I have loaded my ebooks onto the device via itunes, (They are in epub format, and are on the device, as indicated through itunes. ) Come to find out, There is ZERO app support for even the slightest rudimentary functions of this device, ibooks is no longer available, and there are no apple apps that allow me to access any of my media, much less my books. I have to say, after three days of digging through forums to find a working ebook reader, that actually boots up and functions, let alone accesses my local files, I have had no luck. Frankly, I am very near using this hunk of junk for target practice and never buying an apple product again. I have tried the itunes app store, workaround from my PC, I have tried countless apps, and few of them that have opened, and none have allowed me to access my local epub files... I'm at the point now, where this is my last option, I'm asking for help, because frankly, no matter the amount of googling I do, I cannot find a working app that will do what I need, which is only to function and allow me to read my epub books.. Apple really needs to pay attention to customers with older devices and at least release a line of basic apps for the older devices, even if they get em working and just leave them alone after that.. Having an old device should be an option. Legacy apps, released by apple, should be a non-issue. Does anyone have a solution to my problem? Because at this point, again, this iPad is a complete useless paper-weight to me, and I can not stomach the idea of selling this to someone, knowing they will have the same issues I did.
Before you post, I do not want a lecture about how old the device is, I don't need to hear about how I should upgrade, I have no desire to pay for another device that will go obsolete in less than 10 years, and no longer be usable. Which is Exactly why I don't buy Apple products in the first place. It is a functioning iPad by hardware standards, it works just fine. It should still have even the slightest amount of support, yet it does not, hence my frustration. So, that said, please, keep arrogant, and unhelpful answers to yourself. To those that do have something helpful to add, Thank you, so much, in advance.
I hate to inform you that you are wrong, Sir. The only reason I am bothering to respond, is because I did, in fact, find a solution. It does require a PC. You may be able to do this with a Mac, However, I do not own one, therefore, I do not have a guide on it. But here's how I did it on PC.
Fourth, after about an hour of poking around, I managed to go to "Manage App Data," at the top of iFunbox, which is where I found my Bluefire icon. Left Click the Bluefire icon, then select "Open Sandbox." This will open another window showing a selection of files and folders for the app. From here you want to select, "Documents." This will navigate you into the folder, where the default books are stored.
Fifth, from this window, look to the top of the "Sandbox" window, and select, Copy from PC. This will open up an "Open" window, and from here you navigate to your ebooks, select which ones you want to transfer onto the ipad, and select "Open." This will transfer your books to the ipad, in a way that bypasses the internal routing of the program, and the hangup of just about any ereader that I've gotten to work.
I read that books are actually linked to users - not devices (very annoying) - so as a test I created a user (with the Role of Student) in Apple School Manager and synced & imported this into Jamf Pro so the user account now shows up in Jamf Pro as well.
For the eBook I then put the the user account in the "Scope" of the book.
In the "General" tab I have made sure the book is Enabled, is set to Install Automatically/Prompt Users to Install (iOS only), and have selected Free (so no need for an VPP invitation).
However - the book still does not appear in the Books app on the iPad. When I open the Books app under "Reading Now" it just says "Sorry ... Something went wrong. Please try again." with a Retry button that doesn't do anything when tapped. Under "Library" it says there are "No Books. To add books to this collection, go to your library and tap Edit" however the Edit button is greyed out and can't be tapped.
I have also gone into Users > Volume Assignments and created a new Volume Assignment with the user in Scope and the eBook ticked (it shows the total number of volumes I have of the Book - 80 - but 0 being In Use).
Log in to Apple School Manager and create your user accounts there. For my scenario, these accounts are simply for the iPads (students are not being given accounts) to distribute books, so my account names are generic for the device (e.g. kipad1 for kindy iPad 1). Assign these accounts with role of Student. Make the Password Policy 4-digit. Also, create a Class, and add the newly created accounts to the Class. This will make it much easier to import into Jamf Pro.
Selecting the Settings gear icon on the top right > Apple Education Support (Check "Enable Apple Education Support" is enabled) > Apple School Manager Instances (Check "Enable Apple School Manager Integration" is enabled) > Select "Force Sync". This will now let you import your newly created users from ASM into Jamf Pro.
Go to Jamf Pro > Users > Select Invitations > New > Give it a Display Name (check Location is showing your ASM VPP, Distribution Method set to Prompt users ../make available ..., and Enable "Automatically registers with volume purchasing ..."). Select Scope and Add the Users you imported to the Scope. Save.
You now want to remove any restrictions profiles applied to the iPads (hence the need to have them in your possession). Go to Devices > Configuration Profiles > Select "Restrictions" > Go to "Scope" > Edit > Remove the relevant targets > Save.
Check to see the iPads in your possession no longer have any restrictions applied. This should be obvious with default apps reappearing.
Go to your iPad(s). Open Settings > Sign in on the iPad(s) with the Apple ID(s) you created in ASM. You should be prompted to change the password from 1234. Do so now. NOTE: I could not find a way to do this remotely. Slightly frustrating.
At the same time as 12 for each iPad: Go to Jamf Pro > Devices > Search for the device (iPad) > User and Location > Edit > enter the username for the Apple ID you are using > click Search and the fields should auto populate > Save.
You should now be ready to deploy eBooks. Check the iPad has the Books app showing. Open Settings and check that the Apple ID is showing but you can no longer select it to edit it (should be greyed out).
