Hey Family, 

I know some of you have heard that my Dad, Dick Heidkamp, has been in the hospital this week, and I just wanted to send an update and some notes about calling or visiting.

Dick is doing fine right now -- very much himself. He went into the hospital -- AMITA Resurrection on Talcott -- on Sunday because he was wheezing and getting out of breath quickly. They are still doing tests, and it isn't clear how much it's the heart or the lung ... or something else. The heart issues will probably just require lifestyle changes right now. The lung issues could be pneumonia or an infection, but they need to see the test results, which probably won't all be clear until early next week -- and he's likely to spend this weekend in the hospital.

In any case, he would love visitors -- and they allow visitors, one at time, from 8am to 8pm. His room is 4128.

If someone would like to call him, they can try his mobile phone at 847-903-5138. Sometimes he picks up and sometimes he doesn't. Keep trying. You can also call or text me at 773-991-7341 for any updates.

Spoke briefly with Dick today.  He was on his way to a couple tests.  Given the situation he sounded pretty good.  Thanks for updating everyone.  Your dad is much loved and admired.

Hey Family,

I wanted to give everyone an update on my Dad, Dick

He is still at Resurrection hospital off Talcott. It has been a couple of weeks and he still has fluid build-up in one of his lungs and his oxygen levels are still low. Heart issues have been ruled out as the cause of it, but the doctors are otherwise still struggling to figure out a successful treatment. There is a bit of sense of urgency at this point.

His spirits are still good, although he is a bit more exhausted when you talk to him.

He would love visitors -- and they allow visitors, one at time, until 8pm. His room is 4128.

Hey Family,

We are writing with an update on our dad, Dick. He will be entering hospice care in the next few days. We reached this point after over three weeks at Resurrection hospital. He came in having difficulty breathing, and a variety of tests have found issues with his lung and kidneys, including possible cancerous growths. He has only grown weaker over the three weeks, and the doctors agreed that the most important thing right now is his comfort.

He has not been in pain. In fact, he has kept his usual good mood throughout everything. He feels very lucky to have had an amazingly full life within the most amazing extended family, and he has really enjoyed sharing stories with the many of you who have visited him the past week.

We will send out another e-mail when I have more specific details about where he will be located. He definitely would love to see anyone who would like to visit. In fact, right now he is in room 3129 at Resurrection Hospital and visitors are welcome until 8pm each day. He will likely be in the room for at least tomorrow.

Hey Family, 

We just wanted to give an update on Dick. He is in the wonderful Rainbow Hospice Ark facility on the 4th floor of Resurrection Hospital. Don and he were longtime volunteers with Rainbow Hospice, so this feels very full circle and appropriate.

Visitors are certainly welcome, although at this point he is medicated to the point where he is waking up very infrequently. He has so enjoyed all the visits and phone calls over the past couple of weeks and they have left him feeling such a strong sense of his big family's love. His mind, when it has wandered about the last couple of days, kept bringing up funny and happy memories of all the great adventures with family and friends throughout his life. Thank you all for all you have been and continue to be for him and each other.

In any case, if you are visiting, feel free to give us a text or call and let us know you are coming (Bernie at 773-991-7341 or Mike at 847-477-2618) and we can let you know the directions.

Hey Family, we know some of you have already heard, but we wanted to let everyone know that our dad, Dick, passed away last night, very peacefully, under the wonderful care of Rainbow Hospice's Ark at Resurrection Hospital. Thanks again to everyone's visits and thoughts and love. 

We will send out a more official announcement later, but the wake will be at Nelson Funeral Home in Park Ridge, from 4-9pm, this Thursday, March 17. We will have a funeral mass at Mary, Seat of Wisdom church at 10am on Friday, March 18.

The mass will be followed by a celebration of Dick's life -- combined with a belated celebration of the life of our mom, Ann, who passed away a year ago when a Covid surge prevented us from gathering -- at Moretti's in Edison Park.

Thanks again for being the greatest extended family around.
