There are a few of us who are SA based but as we are away on assignment (and I'm presently in Kenya) we will miss Heidi's funeral. Mixed with the sadness of losing our dear friend and colleague, is the disappointment at not being able to be there on Saturday to say farewell. I know I will be among many who will lift a glass and share a few moments of silence as a tribute to Heidi who was truly inspiring at a time when so many of us feel journalism is facing many challenges. If there are others who wish to perhaps consider a memorial service at some stage in the future to celebrate Heidi's extraordinary life, I would be delighted to help organise it if Jonah and Niko want to consider this. In the meantime my thoughts will be with you on Saturday.

I too am in Kenya and my wife, Christiane, who was very close to
Heidi, is in Germany. I think a memorial service at some later stage,
perhaps a more jolly affair, would be a fine idea - accepting of
course that the relatives wish to do so. rgds
