Dear NEIL,

Well done to those of you who competed on Sunday, your patience and spirit was outstanding. We wanted to let you know a few of the facts that we have available at this stage.

It is believed that local protestors scattered a large number of carpet tacks along significant sections of the course.  The safety issue was highlighted by the lead group of cyclists experiencing punctures at a specific section at Innerhadden and Schiehallion, 43 miles into the route.  Subsequently hundreds of additional cyclists also received punctures as they approached the area.

As a result of safety concerns, primarily that cyclists could receive punctures in fast sections of the course and subsequently fall from their bikes at high speeds, IMG, in co-ordination with the local police and council implemented immediate safety contingencies.

These contingencies included holding competitors mid course, resulting in a delay to the participants taking part in the event, while the roads were made as safe as possible.  Once we were satisfied with the safety of the course the event was resumed.

We are treating this matter very seriously and are working with the local police and local council to investigate matters further and are making progress you will be pleased to hear.

2010 Entry Open

In order to ensure the same situations doesn't happen in 2010, we are already in discussion with the local police and council to put in preventative measures. We hope to see you all again in 2010.

Results

Provisional Race Results are now available, these results are not official however we still recorded race times and want to acknowlege fast times in each category. Keep visiting our website for more information.

For those that were held up during event the total time for the hold up was 1hr 25mins (for the first cyclists to be held), with a distance of 8 miles cut out of the course.

Feedback

Each year we aim to improve the race so that we can maintain our position as one of the world's premier closed road cycling events. Your feedback is essential for us to keep improving. This questionnaire will only take a few minutes of you time, and we would appreciate your feedback. We are especially interested in the number of punctures you received.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Macmillan Cancer Support

MAcmillan

Congratulations for taking part in the Etape Caledonia from Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan cancer Support wish to say a very big thank you and well done to all those who took part in yesterday's event. It was incredible to witness the positive attitude, team spirit and determination of everyone who cycled, to make yesterday a huge success, in spite of the adversity thrown your way. Team Macmillan hopes that each and every person who took part in the race, no matter how many miles they rode, feels very proud of their achievements.

Whether you joined Team Macmillan on the big day, or not, we would like to express our gratitude to you for your support. In spite of the incident that took place yesterday morning, Sunday was an amazing day for Macmillan Cancer Support. Team Macmillan cyclists have raised over £240,000 through their participation in the Etape Caledonia. With two more months until the fundraising deadline, this figure is set to rise further still. This is a hugely positive legacy of the day, and it certainly is evidence of what an inspirational group of people took part in the event.

This is enough to fund four Macmillan nurses for a year each. These nurses could help hundreds of people affected by cancer, and reach even more families and friends who need Macmillan’s support too. It would be impossible to fund vital services, such as our health care professionals, without the support of members of Team Macmillan. Thank you to everyone who joined the team.

If you didn’t join Team Macmillan, but would like to make a donation, you can donate very simply online CLICK HERE quoting reference ET2009 in the comments field. Alternatively send a cheque made payable to Macmillan Cancer Support to:

Something Different
Duathlon

If you feel like another challenge then try adding a run section to your race! Entries are now open to everyone for the Chelsea and Westminster Health Charity London Duathlon on 13th September.

This is the only time the roads of Richmond Park in London are closed during the year, and with the stunning scenery and sightings of deer on the route it is not surprising that world’s largest Duathlon is getting bigger.

Last year we had over 3,500 entries and it looks like we will exceed that in 2009. Challenge distances are available which is a 9km run, 20km bike, 5km run.
