The San Bushmen believe in a universal Life Force which animates the human body – they call it NUM ENERGY.

San People perform healing ceremonies whilst they are in an altered state of consciousness in what is known as a ‘trance dance’ or ‘healing dance’, which is very similar to what we see in Haitian Voodoo and other forms of Shamanism.

The San bushmen healers go into a trance in order to cure sickness. The San people tie offerings for animal spirits to the trees, or will use drums in order to contact animal and ancestor spirits. The drumming and the dancing increases the force of the NUM energy. The drum vibrations activate the NUM energy in the bodies of the San healers.

San healers aren’t just curing physical illness using NUM energy. Their dancing and drumming expels what they call “star sickness”. This star sickness is a force which can take over an entire tribe and causes jealousy, anger and quarrels. These things are thought to pull people apart and damage unity. The Trance dancing is used as a form of exorcism because it releases hostility.

Also in this powerful state, healers often walk on fire, see the insides of peoples’ bodies and can ‘remote view’ places a long way in the distance – some of the Bushmen even claim that they can send their spirit to float away and visit a place which they call ‘God’s home’.

Sir Laurens van der Post was warned that the NUM energy gets so strong it can become dangerous. Healers experiencing this must not point their finger at anyone, especially a child, because a Night Demon or “death thing” might go along their arm, leap into the child, and kill it…
