Schools
Urged To Install Free Condom Machines
Free condom machines would be planted in high
schools across the nation as part of a plan to
tackle sexually-transmitted diseases and
reduce the abortion rate. Family Planning
Victoria (FPV) is calling on the Federal
Government to fund contraception in Australia
as a way of encouraging safe sex and
preventing unplanned pregnancies. FPV chair
Sally Cockburn says having free condoms in
high schools would be the perfect start.
"For year 11 and 12 I think that having a
free condom vending machine in their common
room is a reasonable thing," she said.
"I think it's time we all grew up and
realised that we need to protect our young
people, not shove this sort of stuff under the
carpet. I would have loved this to have
happened 10 years ago, 15 years ago, but it's
not too late and I call on both political
leaders to think about it very carefully and
to support this." When asked whether the
condoms would also be available to students in
younger grades, Ms Cockburn said it was common
knowledge that school children under the legal
age were having sex. "I don't think there
is a specific age we're going to put on
this," she said.
