All,

Please welcome a new member to our little group: Ray Brooks!

Ray found the google group on the internet, and is interested in
joining in the discussion, even though we're too far apart to game
together.

Here's a little biographical note he sent...

"As for location, I'm way up in the great white north actually,
in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Not that it is very white right now.
It is the middle of summer and we're definitely feeling it.
Burlington is just a little to the west of Toronto along the north
shore of Lake Ontario. It is about a 40 minute drive to Buffalo from
where I am. Well, that's if the border crossing isn't too
busy... :)"

Everyone say Hi!

Roger

P.S.: Ray, you should be able to post now.

Thanks for the warm welcome Roger! I really appreciate it. I
stumbled on the group after I found the historian class mentioned on
ENWorld (I think that's where it was anyway!). The class intrigued me
so much I had to see what else was being developed by Roger.

I have to say one of the things that interests me the most about
Heaven Emptied is that you can easily apply it to pretty much any
other standard campaign setting you've got. A few serial numbers
filed off here and there, the occasional mention of the ancient empire
of your choice, and suddenly any campaign world becomes a custom
history for Heaven Emptied. Even better, the pivotal divine death
that starts the whole ball rolling could be caused by the players
themselves. Heck, you've got plenty of material to work with for the
setup. And what better way to transition to 4e...? For instance,
Paizo's Age of Worms adventure path sets things up nicely. If you
take the PCs to the point where they actually destroy Kyuss, the big-
bad on the verge of destroying the world, you could then fast-forward
the timeline and explain that things didn't really turn out the way
everyone hoped and the gods were not happy. If you wanted to maintain
some campaign continuity, you could even have the players create
characters who are descendants of the original heroes. They could be
in hiding or could almost have been wiped out by avenging outsiders
with only one or two individuals left who might rally the mortals
against the powers divine. You could even have the PCs involved in
searching for (or secretly protecting!) the heroic bloodline of one of
the ancient Godslayers (with the idea ripped kicking and screaming
from Dan Brown's Davinci Code of course). I even see huge potential
for campaigns and quests to restore the Dark Path so the dead/undead
can get the cycle of reincarnation rolling again. And of course those
divine curses are just begging to be brought down or worked around by
adventurers with ingenuity. It definitely shouldn't be easy, but hey,
what truly heroic feat is? :)

As you can see, this whole idea has really got my creative juices
flowing. My mind is almost spinning with possibilities! Kudos and
many thanks to Roger and the rest of you for sharing this. And of
course since you guys are lucky enough to be playing it, it will be
great to see what direction you take it and how the setting grows. I
look forward to inspiring discussion!

Thanks!

Ray

So many possibilities... Be careful Ray, we may have to live up to all that!  :-)

Do you have a game that can get some value out of the material?  If so, definitely let us know how it works out in play!

Hi Ray!

I just wanted to take a minute to welcome you to the group :-).

I never thought of how Roger's setting could be used for other worlds
before you mentioned it. In the same vein, a friend even noted the
similarities between the Dragonlance setting and this one (anyone up
for killing Takhisis?).

Maybe Roger should consider self-publishing?

You're right about Mr. Terrell being creative ... he does come up with
some impressive stuff. As a general rule, I haven't been that
impressed with 4e so far. I'm expecting Roger to change all of that
(yep, Roger, I have HIGH expectations). He usually has no real
problem making a campaign fun though, so I'm not worried.

Gotta get to bed now. I'llbe in terested in seeing what other ideas
you have Ray.

Larkin, I'm shocked at you.  Shocked, I say!

...

*You* went to bed at 1:30 in the morning?  I'm used to getting notes from you at 4 AM!

;)
