There have been a lot of good ideas for furniture lately but many of the designs assume access to a CNC that can cut large-ish sheet goods. There was also a recent Slack discussion around the usefulness of a panel saw.

I would like to propose that we build a Maslow style CNC (maslowcnc.com). It appears to be an open source project with a stated build cost of around $500. I don’t know much about these tools but they look like they would work well for cutting furniture components as well as the cuts you might use a panel saw for.

Given the state of the sprinkler project I don’t think it makes sense to commit existing funds to this tool. Instead, I think targeted fund raising amongst interested parties makes sense. I wanted to get the proposal out there to judge interest in the project and solicit any feedback that others may have about this particular style of CNC router. The cost and floor space requirements are what make it attractive to me but I am suspicious of their rigidity (or lack thereof)

What do you think?

I'm in, and will contribute.  This addresses a need for precision cutting beyond the capability of the Pee Pew, is space efficient, and I think G-code is something we can work with already.

I vote Yes!

I'll commit $50

On a side note, from what I'm reading, the $500 kit available right now is just for the cnc hardware and electronics (x, y & z axis). We'll need to donate a router and build a frame for it. They recommend a Ridgid R22002. If anyone has one to donate, great. If not, that's about another $200 new. So if we go that route it'll probably be closer to $750 before we're through.

YES! I am working on the next iteration of the MEGA M. E.S.A. For the Mesa Prototyping Festival which is for a more permanent 2 mo installation. (Feb and March the unveiling to correspond to SW Maker Fest) Members of the HSL community are helping me with design and engineering. I plan on also promoting HSL with this project if chosen. I will put in $500 in the budget towards equipment for the CNC router at HSL and $500 for misc equipment for this and future public art projects to be built here. I should know in the next couple of weeks if it is awarded.
Cheers
Jaime

So this and reminded me of the maslow

I am a fan of the maslow style.  Watched a video on it.  I am a little concerned about how slow it is.

You looking to make those for the lab space, or use the lab space to build and sell those, or both?

Not looking too closely, I think I could fab up one of those with my home workshop.

The hope is to raise the money necessary to build one for the lab and include it in the wood shop.  Last week at HYH the attendees voted to support the tool provided we identify funding outside of the lab's general funds and that the wood shop champion(s) concur.  Before spending too much time on fund raising I am hoping that one of the wood shop champions weighs in.  We have some time since this would come after the wood shop is built out but it's never too early to get started.

I'm hoping to resurrect this thread and plan. What is the feasibility of putting this in the "kitchen" with ventilation to the outside and localized fire suppression? As well as dust containment?

I was in favor of this originally, but the difficulties overwhelmed it at the time. I think we should develop your proposal further.

The dust collection system could either be moved as needed. The table in the kitchen would need to be moved. The screen printing station should need to be protected. Noise is the router/cutter, that's a challenge. Does that wall have room for a full sheet of plywood, which is the best use case for a Maslow?

Agree on your points, Rick. Yes, the wall itself can facilitate a whole piece of ply. I just checked back in the kitchen. It is more than sufficient. As for noise, it's no noisier than other machinery, and we were going to put a door into the kitchen from the hallway, anyway. Then we'll replace the door between biochemlab and kitchen.

Well, a router running full speed for hours might be an interesting addition.

I believe that at we need a more open industrial space to do this. We’ve been putting out cnc router proposals for as long as I’ve been at HSL. Plumbing a vacuum system and space constraints will be challenging. Noise will be an issue and there will be a layer of dust everywhere. I wish we had an outside space that we could use to do this kind of stuff.
I love the idea and would help putting it together but I think it will be a bit much for the current space.

Good. We need more real tools. Even the coworking champion supported this, though

We could enclose it to contain dust. Doors for sound. We could exhaust out the window.

Since this is a revival of a 5 year old proposal I made, I wanted to weigh in. When I made the proposal the lab had several projects that would have benefited from a CNC router that could handle a full 4x8 sheet of plywood. There was a lot of support for the proposal but there was also a lot of opposition. Dust, noise, and safety were among the objections. At the same time, a couple of other options for a full-sheet CNC router came up. I let the proposal die a silent death. The initial proposal included the raising of funds rather than using lab general funds. While I haven't seen a financial report in over a year, I suspect the lab is still operating at a deficit.

At this time, I do not support the proposal.

We are still at a deficit. At no time did I suggest we use hsl funds for this.

I'm in support of having this. It seems to be in the top 3 tools people want us to have. We are creative enough to find a way to make this work.

Easily would be funded by the people who would take the certification class on it. The Maslow CNC 4 looks seriously improved over past designs. I was less sure about those. It even automatically retracts the belts for storage.

Since dust will be mitigated by a cover, and ventilation can go right out the window, the only other problem is the noise.

Do we think a closed door is insufficient to cover the noise? We can test with a regular router and ask people, maybe? I like real data, not suppositions.

Someone mentioned it possibly going outside. Perhaps we could weld an anti-theft cage for the wall.

I'm more of a fan of solving problems than just shooting something down. Especially for a tool that, like the laser, might lift us out of deficit. I know the guitar building classes I want to do will bring in money.

We are currently sold out and 100% focused on delivering to our Kickstarter backers. We will reopen sales once we are delivering to our Kickstarter backers who made Maslow4 possible.

LOL we got a Maslow CNC kit donated as part of a much larger donation. Version 3 Maslow CNC I think. It is the chain version.

Now that we are done deciding if we should get one or not we should decide what to do with the one we have.

I had talked offline a little bit with Shaundra. Was suggesting some testing on the sound levels to assess feasibility. Also had intended to propose it as a SyncStarter as opposed to Kickstarter where we get enough people interested in classes to be certified to use it that it would cover the cost of purchase. We should still do something like this to assess interest and fund some supplies for soundproofing improved dust collection or anything else we think would compliment this.

I'm very busy at the moment planning several events. Anyone interested in helping sort out what to do with this?

That's excellent. And since this is a donation, let's scheme how to make this fit in, be a good neighbor in the lab, and be productive. Wow...
