I want to encourage more people to use the woodworking tools. This is my story about the woodworking efforts and shift to a CNC router.

The lab has a great collection of woodworking tools and it would be great to see more people making use of them. I set myself to the task and spent over 60 hours working towards that. I hosted woodworking days, and watched a bunch of videos to learn more about safety, reviewed possible projects, tools and accessories. All that with the goal of making it easier for those wanting to use the woodworking. Ultimately I learned what not to do, but I didn't learn what to do. It makes it really hard to be helpful when I can tell people what not to do, but I am not sure what to do.

Also although we have nearly all the right woodworking tools we are missing some of the jigs and accessories that would make things easier to do. The table saw being a jobsite saw means it is small and awkward for larger materials. I could list lots of other specific challenges I learned about, but that's not the point.

I felt that personally I needed to work on a handful of projects using the tools we have to build up my skills. I started looking for project ideas that would be interesting to me. Most of my ideas and projects are how to help the lab, or how to help other people. This is usually great for me and I like that, but I figured it would also be good to pick a project just for myself for once. Ultimately I found a good idea and worked out a design. It was a project for a gift for someone else, but it is something I'm excited about. Since it is a gift I won't put details here for now.

Sadly despite trying to think of a project using the tools we already have I realized it would be over it would be 10 times easier to make it on a CNC Router. Huge bummer, but I was kind of invested in this project idea.

This pushed me into thinking about how we could get a basic CNC for use at the lab. Something I had thought about in the past, but now I had some specific constraints. My project was 10"x10" and I figured a small CNC might be the ticket. A friend has one of the Genmitsu 3018. Turns out the prices go up as you get closer to the size I would want. With that looking less ideal I turned my attention back to the Maslow project. I kept trying to think of ways to have a frame that would be small enough to store in the lab and ways we could mount it when not using it. Ultimately I didn't solve that problem but realized that we can mount it horizontally and not require a frame.

That's when I confirmed that it could be mounted outside and asked if other people wanted to contribute to the project.

That is how I got to where I'm at with moving forward on a larger format CNC Router. Though I also know that over the years many people have talked about having a CNC Router generally and a full size one specifically.

That is some background on the efforts. Sadly there is no current woodworking day happening, but I'm looking forward to finding volunteers to help with both woodworking and the CNC Router.

I figured this longer detailed story is too much for some of our other threads so I put it here.

It's just an idea until there's a date and time included.

I encourage my guitar building students to come see the space, join and contribute.  Not sure how often they come.  I just had 30 students this past semester take the classes.  Im hopeful a few came out.  I know of 2 who went west to another maker space since they live that way.  In January, ill see to it again to mention the heatsync lab is a viable after class option.  Rino
