I found 14" sonotube for cheap and can loan 3 of the 4 cats, however one cat is feral so I have doubts on the schematic provided. Can someone convert the schematic to shop drawings with a bill of materials so we can properly estimate the cost? I think 14" sonotube might be too large. 

Unlike Moheeb, I think the details make it funner.

I misunderstood at first. I thought the plan was much more ambitious with each station to function as independent module that could join together and form a larger hackerspace Voltron.

Even if this was not the original intent I think we should consider this much more ambitious version. I think we have more stations than Voltron sections though. We may have to shift to using multiple modules per limb or shift to a form factor of a crab. Or perhaps a scorpion form with the laser station as the stinger.

To elaborate on Eric and Milton’s ideas, There is a load of space in the rafters. Knowing cats like height, I’d like to suggest (note: I did not use the dreaded word ‘proposal’) that the spaces above be dedicated to the Voltron build. This would stop the inevitable issue of cats and tubes underfoot, tubes break and cats make a god-awful noise thus defeating the quiet takeover that cats are quite capable of. That said, I can offer the much needed fourth cat, he even looks a bit like the one facing forward although his most common activity is napping, usually on my shoes.

Finally! Something I have experience with.

I have 3 of the 4 cats but one of mine has enough size to cover for two cats.

Also the 14" sonotube sounds like a feasible solution, it's important to have appropriate spacing for proper fluffyness, at least 1/2-in according to my trustable expert here by my side.

If scaling becomes a concern I have a bench of 6 cats, some of which I don't feel would be compatible with the mission, however if you need raw output unsullied by brain activity, my orange tabby Happy is the way to go.

Thank you Smith, for the offer if the unsullied brain Orange. I'm afraid that my grey tuxedo has opinions that he voices loudly at all hours. He may not be the best tester.

Cprossu, I have brought in a few experts to this discussion, both my tuxedos, and the neighbor black who likes to sit on my front lawn at night. With their help we have devised a comparison of human vs. cat speeds:

Human vs. Cat Speed Comparison

Movement Type	Average Cat	Average Human
Walking Speed	1.3 to 3.3 mph (2.1 to 5.3 km/h)	2.5 to 3.5 mph (4.0 to 5.6 km/h)
Top Sprinting Speed	Up to 30 mph (48 km/h)	Up to 12 to 15 mph (19 to 24 km/h)

With this chart, you should be able to map out what it would take to walk a cat to DC.


Rafael, I agree with your dimensions of the sonotube, while a small cat would be comfortable in just about any space, it takes hefty sizes to fit comfortable large cats. I would also suggest specific larger areas, areas where the cats can take a break, set up with food, treats, litter, water or toys, not all in the same areas though.

Another thought, maybe some cardboard boxes would be great too. We all know how much cats love their cardboard boxes.

As a past feline veterinarian I volunteer my expertise for maintaining this apparatus and working feline parts. I also have 4 available for spare parts as needed but can not speak to their ability to remain compliant and participatory. I think the straight line mapping to DC may need a few adjustment in routes. In case rodents or other chaseable distraction occurs.

Linda’s cat would be well qualified to work well at height famously residing preferentially  on the roof.
