Good afternoon Lab mates,

I apologize for multiple proposals but I am trying to juggle a few things at the moment.

One of the key selling points on our printers was always that they were going to have an AMS or automatic material switcher system available to them. There was a lot of community backlash when it got delayed again, and again, and again, and a lot of folks started to return their printers thinking they would never come out. They have now come out though! And whats more, while they will eventually retail at $150, right now they are available at pre-order for $55. The unit does require a significant amount of work done to the printer it is installed on, however, amounting to almost an entire carriage swap, but that would provide us with additional spare parts. I am therefore proposing that we purchase one unit now and install it and see how it functions and whether or not we wish to pursue additional units down the line if and /when the pricing increases. The units will ship in august for the slot I have access to and there may be shipping but if so I will happily just cover the shipping if the lab covers the $55 total.

Below is the link to the product.

Have we verified our printers are entirely compatible, and aren't missing connectors and can actually use Canvas?

Not sure I am understanding correctly.  Why wait to see if the $55 one works before buying two more $150 ones?  I would say just pre-order three at $55 each.  The odds of them not working is low, and if they don't, I am sure they can be returned.

The bylaws allow the board to authorize expenses up to $50, anything above that
requires a proposal before the money is spent.

Well we had discussed previously that the $5 pushes these over the edge of board discretionary spending, hence the proposal. As to kirks question:

Currently the printers we have work, and work well. The canvas is a wild card, there aren't enough of them in peoples hands yet to evaluate if they work well or not. Installing the canvas onto a machine could brick the machine, or cause a lot of unforeseen consequences. In addition, it will be adding several layers of complexity to already complex machines, adding multiple additional points of failure. Internally we have discussed multiple times if we even WANT to have more than one machine be set up with an AMS or not. Since installing the AMS requires rebuilding a significant portion of the machine its not as simple as just plugging something in. We could render a machine that is already working, and working well, completely unusable. If that happens to one machine, right now we have spare units that we can get another machine up and running immediately while we undo the upgrade or seek an alternate path. If we tried to upgrade all of them simultaneously, we would no longer have that option available to us as we dont have 3 full alternate machines right now. Realistically, we may never NEED more than one machine with AMS and there's no reason to risk the working machines we have. Once we have installed it into one machine and its working we can evaluate how much of a lift it will be to upgrade the other machines and whether we even want to or if one is sufficient. Chances are pretty good for at least 6 months to maybe a year after it starts shipping that we can purchase other peoples units they no longer want or elegoo may never raise the price they may keep it at the $55 level. There have been several folks who feel we should never upgrade any of the machines to AMS because the risk of breakage is too high.
