Hey, all, I think the wishlist on the wiki needs a little updating.  I'm trying to compile an amazon wishlist (with those handy prime buttons) that will let people click a link, and have a thing appear on our door, hooray!

If anybody could go through the wiki (http://wiki.heatsynclabs.org/wiki/Wishlist) and update what we need, and what we already have, that would be great.

What would be even more great is if you could give me an amazon link (prime preferred) to buy it!

Examples of things we need (but I need specific links to add to the wishlist...some of these things I just don't know which to get) are:

bandsaw blades
circular saw blades

Just stuff that people can browse and buy for us if they feel like it.

The whiteboard shopping list says the below. I've erased it now, so if nobody "second"s these items they'll be removed from the wishlist.

Bar Clamps (size?)
Lube (silicone, lithium, graphite)
M6 machine screws, nuts, washers (apx. 1" long)
Nylon washers (size? where to buy?)
Wire strippers (gauges needed?)
0.032" Rosin Core Solder

Hey all, this is what the wish list looks like right now (The amazon thing I'm putting together):

I found a different miter saw that appears to outperform the one listed on our wiki and added that instead.

This is mostly stuff that I know about which we want right now.  I'm sure we also need trash bags and things like that.  If anybody knows the sizes we need, can you link me to them so I can add them?

Once this list is "finished", I think it would be something great to link to on our websites, or let people know about if they want to help contribute in a way other than membership dues.

The huge advantage to this is the lack of friction between wanting to buy us something, and having it show up at our door.  It's a couple of clicks if you have an amazon account, and you don't have to ask anybody which one to buy, it's all right there for you.

Jasper, Austin, your input on the welding mask and jacket that I added here would be nice.

Ultimate consignment had lots of clamps when I was there, and if we get the discount for the lab they'd be a very good price.

Why does our welding jacket need to be XXL? I think it'd rather be a
bit too tight than loose and getting in the way...

Okay, that makes sense.  I chose really big because that means that everybody could wear it, but being too baggy could be bad.  These are cheap, though.  I'll add more sizes.

The helmet looks super sexy. Its got good reviews too. I prefer 3M
speedglas but you can't get speedglas for $99.

PS I just lol'd when I saw that the "high force plunger" was also ribbed...

Yeah, that helmet looks totally bad ass.  Having a couple of autoshades would be really nice, IMHO.  I was showing Alyson some welding things last night, and while the gold glass helmet is nice, sitting in the dark waiting for the arc to start is weird while you're teaching somebody.

Tangent, but if I see you tonight, will you remind me to check the battery situation on that autoshade?  Having it not darken last night when you were tigging was not good.

Agreed.

Also -- and really this goes to anyone --

You can always ask to use my helmet which I always keep in my box. It
might fit her better anyway since its the smaller women's fit version
of the speedglas. But seriously, do ask first.

Does it have a battery or is it powered from the light of the arc?
Austin? Tim? Its the crappy harbor freight one with the busted

Because otherwise I will NEVER be able to get into it without blowing lots of seams!

Probably I should get my own welding jacket that is big enough to still move in and keep in the box I am now official enough to have!

Hey guys, for safety equipment like this, we should first talk to our local 3M rep. Those guys are great for giving samples! Let me find the contact information of the current one and I'll post back.

My old rep is going to send us a bunch of safety products. Told him to send us gloves, googles/glasses, masks, earplugs, and look for a complete speedglass mask for us. We'll see what his care package brings us. He doesn't have any jackets. If we get a box labeled "Trunk - Safety Products" that is this stuff, open it up.

As for the clamps, harbor freight has a ton of these and they are really inexpensive there (don't know about the quality). They also have a big sale starting on Thursday. They also have a welding mask for $35 bucks.

Oh and I have a new plunger used from this bathroom scene...(see attached) :-P
I'll bring it in.... A plunger with history

My clamp rack includes a number of "F" clamps from Harbor Freight- they get used, but only after all the other suitable ones are busy.  The biggest reason for this is that the "F" clamps have a cone with the a plastic cover for the moveable pad.  As soon as you apply any pressure, the cone cuts through the plastic and then you're leaving marks on your project.  The other issue is that their rough machining causes the cone to bind when being tightened, causing the end to "walk".  That makes more marks and often leaves the clamps in the wrong spot.

If you can live with these limitations, they're OK.   And when you need 100 clamps to do your glue up, having them is  a good thing.  OTOH, you will cuss at them every time you use them.  I'd prefer to spend a bit more on the better quality clamps- but then I'm sensitive to marks on my projects.

HF is selling auto-darken welding helmets for $37 this weekend. I think I may pick a spare to keep in my box in case I get a chance to do any welding. Especially if I get a chance to learn some TIG welding!

The HF ones are ok but the contrast is all wrong, especially for TIG.
you just can't see whats going on. I found it easier to use the kind
you have to flip down than use the crappy auto darkening. You just
can't weld if you can't see your arc and your puddle and where you are
going.

I have not used anything but the cheapest of the cheap and 3M
speedglas which is the best of the best. I guess for $37 you can't go
wrong if its not perfect. The other brand on the wishlist got great
reviews.

Still, the gold glass that Brian's helmet has is better than any auto
darkening but you have to coordinate your "head flip" with your hand
motions and that's hard for a beginner....

My HF helmet works great, never used it for TIG tho, just MIG.  I'm wondering if you got a bad HF auto helmet, or if you just have better taste than I do.

+1 to Corey's comment there. My HF helmet is great for MIG, but I never use it for TIG either. For $37 even if it's just for MIG it's not bad. It sounds like you do get what you pay for in this area if you want something that's good for all types.

3M Speedglass 100V helmet for $31?

http://www.righttoolusa.com/p/3m-Hornell-07-0012-31bl-Speedglas-100v-Variable-Welding-Helmet-4604988.html

And what is the difference between Speedglass 100V and the 900 series?

Mike

Harry Meier

I went over to 3M's site and did a comparison, and it looks like the main difference is in the variability for low amp TIG. The 100 says for TIG >10A, and the 9000 says for TIG >1A. Plus a higher variation in shades and the 9000 has an adjustable delay. SO the low-end speed glass is probably a better quality than the HF, but same capability as far as TIG is concerned.

UPDATE: FWIW - I just took a look at the HF helmet manual and it explicitly says not for TIG...

Most of the TIG Welders I Know use or have used HF Helmets.
Yes they work for TIG.
Yes they Have a "non-removable" rechargeable battery that charges from the ark or the sun if its dead.
Yes I like the look 3M and love the look of a 2 years Warranty.

Wow, that's a lot of stuff.
https://secure.flickr.com/photos/hslphotosync/8137566668/in/photostream

Yes that's a Speedglas SL helmet. Where are we keeping proofs of purchase/warranty information? I trashed the box, but kept the label; it's in my box for now.

We have a couple dozen new pairs of safety glasses, in a variety of flavors. None are eyeglasses-compatible, but we still have several that are. Our wall of safety glasses is full. Do we want to replace some of the more scratched sets, or wait until they're more damaged? Alternately, we could put a couple at each workstation, keeping some on the pegboard for general use. Thoughts?

We also got a nice set of earmuffs, though I'm not sure how to install the adjustment strap. It's currently hanging from them.

The earplugs and dust masks are on the cleaning shelf.

Thanks again, Mark, and a huge thanks to Jorge for sending us all this great safety gear!
