Purpose:
This proposal recommends granting James Kehoe 24/7 access to the makerspace and it's metal shop in recognition of his role as a subject matter expert (SME) / Station Co-Champion and his ongoing contributions to the space.

Responsibilities and Benefits:
Maintaining a safe, functional, and productive metal shop requires consistent attention beyond normal operating hours. Granting James Kehoe 24/7 access would support the following responsibilities:

Perform routine maintenance and preventative upkeep on metalworking equipment.
Address minor repairs and troubleshoot equipment issues before they become larger problems.
Maintain cleanliness and organization to ensure the shop remains safe and welcoming for members.
Prepare equipment, workstations, and materials for upcoming classes and workshops.
Develop and teach metalworking classes that expand educational opportunities for members.
Assist with shop improvements, layout optimization, and implementation of new tools or equipment.
Respond to maintenance needs on a flexible schedule without being limited by building access hours.
Serve as a knowledgeable resource for safe equipment operation and best practices.

Justification:
The metal shop requires regular oversight to remain operational, safe, and valuable to the community. James Kehoe has demonstrated the knowledge, experience, and commitment necessary to support these ongoing needs. Providing 24/7 access would allow maintenance, cleaning, equipment improvements, and class preparation to occur during off-hours when the space is less occupied and without having to have another cardholder there to open the space, minimizing disruption to members while improving the overall quality of the shop.

Granting this level of access is intended solely to support the mission and recognizes James Kehoe's role in the makerspace.

Big fan of James Kehoe! Resurrecting lockpicking night is one of the recent things that brings me most joy. I've been at the lab while its been going on and people are super engaged and seem to be having a blast learning from/with him.

Theres obviously also all the machine shop stuff! Every time I've seen him here he has been around specifically to volunteer. I would love to see or hear about his personal projects! [please don't burn out]

Which brings me to my point, Landon's proposal seems more like a job description (probably whatever LLM wrote it lacked the context) but while I will always explain that card access comes with certain responsibility, it is not a requirement to use it solely for that. Card access is about trust and respecting a person's contribution or desire to contribute where/when they can. James contribution is without a doubt, from few times I met him I feel I can trust him.

However I don't want James or anyone else to think that nomination comes with the expectation that you will always maintain job-level-volunteer dedication or that we are offering it in a transactionary sense. If you get a card and host maybe once every other month, or you don't host at all but help where you can and maybe you have bursts of being involved, thats all fine to me. I trust whatever you do with the card for the lab or for personal is something worthwhile giving you the ability to and I know you will leave the lab better than you found it.

Card access means you are a trusted community member, part of that is you are one we trust will be safe and responsible, one we trust to keep the doors open if you so choose, and one we trust with the vision and culture of the space. When I vote on a card its not because I expect this person will commit to open-hours, I just trust if they ever did that they would be someone who could handle it, welcome members in, encourage them, and ensure safety. I've seen James do that so I know he can do it.

All those boxes are checked for me, say for one, James and I have never explicitly talked about how he views the vision of the space and do-ocracy. Those are things I would like to know, he already has my vote and my gut tells me he gets what we're about, but I'm an old droning fart who cares about keeping our culture alive through its members and will never shut up about hackerspace philosophy.

TLDR: GIVE JAMES A CARD. LET HIM DO WHATEVER HE WANTS.

(p.s. thx for the popcorn some months back)

I support James for cardholder. He has hosted a lot of great things as others have mentioned. Great to have someone proactive about things. Even when things have gotten mixed up or needed clarification James has handled things really well.

Regarding part of what Landon said "Granting this level of access is intended solely to support the mission and recognizes James Kehoe's role in the makerspace."

I don't want my support for this proposal to indicate I am solely supporting the lab when I absolutely want to support James. I don't think it needs to recognize a specific role at the lab. We probably can do a better job of showing our recognition and appreciation to our volunteers. It is great that he understands our mission and definitely it is important for those being nominated to be supportive of our mission and others in the space.

Based on all my interactions with James and those who have talked to me about him I expect a lot of support for this proposal.

Thank you, Landon, for the nomination and thanks to all those who’ve endorsed me. Wow! I didn’t think anyone remembered me.

My motivation is simple: I want to build bike frames.  I took a class a couple years ago and made a frame: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2uYcPqy9s4vUiFGU9

This is a long-term project for me, don’t expect anything soon.  This drives my interest in the machine shop. Since Moheeb asked, I’ve been working a custom kick stand for that bicycle. I’m happy to talk about, but I I’ll try to keep this short. Truth is that I have too many personal projects running at any given time.

I started the lockpicking to show I could be valuable to the Space. When Darrell announced he was leaving, I went into mild panic.  I want access to functioning machine shop! And so now I find myself (co) Champion there. Makes my father proud (retired machinist).  I help out with bikes at the drop of the hat.

I would greatly appreciate card access. I have a family, job, and trails that need attention.  The flexibility would help me learn, work on personal projects, and maintain the shop.
