I am proposing that we reorganize the messy unorganized front display windows.

We really need showcase a clear statement of what we do who we are, and a more well thought out story and mission statement for the average person to have a better understanding of our lab instead of seeing as a place of random people and stuff laying around.

This includes;
  • Tearing down the Random Lego's and placing them back on the Lego Station Bins for future events / Open hours.
  • Fixing the 3D Printer table and Completed prints to ONE Area - This includes a future proposal of building Shelving for the 3D Printers so all 10 can be on ONE Wall. (once we designed the plans)
  • Fixing the Right Side Randomness and showing a better cleaner story on who we are and what we do / past events - with a better, up to date photo slideshow
  • Adding Proper Signage and QR Codes for people to get better insight and information on the Lab
I'm obviously open to more ideas / criticism on what we could with the spaces.

Thanks,
Frank R

There was some progress made last year towards this, Bob was initiating it and I was going to design vinyls for the windows, but he has not been around the lab since last fall and I got busy with holiday season (I own a small biz so once September hits it starts getting crazy). I am happy to pick up this project again now that my slow season is here, I can meet with you to go over some of the ideas we had come up with and where we left off. I do a lot of graphic design and have experience with window displays.

Here's my Pinterest board I made of some graphic design inspiration - the windows really need some excitement going on to draw people in: https://www.pinterest.com/modularmodular/makerspace-window-ideas/

I'll probably be by the lab either tomorrow or like Tuesday/Wednesday night to do some laser cutting during open hours. Let me know if those work for ya!

FWIW I think getting the LEGO off the table for usable 3d printer space makes complete sense.

I generally think having the LEGO in the window makes people think the lab is a place for kids which it isn't. Despite this I would be sad to see the tower go away. Having said that whatever is best doesn't require my approval.

The main thing about having so many LEGO projects in the window is that it just gives people a chance to not have to destroy their creation immediately after completing it and they could work on it later. Kids do love to put their creations in the window, but there's not a big benefit to the lab from that.

Sometimes cool things just happen, but usually you have to plan them.

I would agree. Things that are in the windows should be things that directly tie into and showcase the lab's mission and what we offer. A smaller LEGO/kids section would be good, especially if is rotated often and shows current items or things one could make in an upcoming class or event, but I think right now it takes up way too much valuable advertising space and has become "storage". The main goal of the windows should be to advertise what we do and to get people in, not to be storage space.

Would it be appropriate to have a "windows champion"? I think it would be better to have the window content designed through "representative democracy" rather than "by committee". The result would be more coherent.

The champion would still be responsible for making reasonable attempts to incorporate members' wishes, they just wouldn't feel compelled to include every random thing someone insists on.

Hey Katy let me know if you’re at the lab today, I’m a few doors down at the moment. Or we can meet next week on Wednesday night!

Thank you,

I would agree, like, if I'm going to donate a bunch of my free time and design expertise to the lab, I don't want to design by committee. I'm willing to allow for a comment review period on the window graphics after the initial design is ready, and will incorporate what feels right, but if we spend ages going back and forth on design, the design will just not get done and that defeats the whole point.

I think it's also really important to remember that your personal taste in graphics may/may not align with the lab's needs, and I will design to the lab's needs.

Update on this;
  • I started taking apart all the random Lego creations, and started cleaning the displays. Need to sort out all the pieces to their rightful color bins.
  • Worked with Katy on an AWESOME design for the windows that includes all the different stations where everyone can participate by showcasing their designs and projects.
  • I am currently handling family stuff this week, but will jump back on to cleaning and organizing when I come back to the lab!
Thanks,
Frank R
