We've done it at 23b. You take the foam pattern (with a foam sprue glued on using Elmer's white glue) and bury it in plain old sand with the sprue exposed. It does not need to be sticky foundry sand, at least in my experience. In fact, I've heard that regular sand is better, as the spaces between the grains allow the gases from the burning foam to escape better.
You pour your hot Aluminum (or whatever) directly onto the exposed foam sprue and it automagically vaporizes away the pattern as it fills the mold. I'm sure it releases Chlorine and other bad stuff. Definitely do it outside.
