21" monitors (without frames) donated

Hey, about 4 large LCD monitors were just donated, they are from video poker machines so they are heavy-duty, bright, hot, and must be mounted in some kind of frame.

They're upstairs on the shelves; one (on the floor) doesn't appear to work but has a good glass front and case.

These are really cool and valuable donations, so please use them in deserving projects!

Here's the concept:

The LCD panel is hanging above the laser and once the laser powers-on a counter starts which displays the following:

XX minutes since the laser operator has interacted with the community

The counter continues to increment whenever the laser-tube is powered up, at some predetermined interval the display begins flashing to indicate increased-urgency.

Ryan has a "Quality Interaction" button which looks just like the Staples "Easy" button, but has a piece of duct tape on it with the words "Quality Interaction" written in Sharpie.  Every time the laser operator interacts with Ryan in a community-centric way, Ryan presses the button, resetting the timer and cancelling any alarms, buzzers, etc.

Problem solved?

Attach an Arduino with simple sensors to a broom. Wirelessly correlate laser progress to cleaning efforts. It's a simple ratio that could be displayed on the screen. Everything about the lab is a ratio; stuff:space, contribution:consumption, etc:wtf... `more  beer, yes...

just thinking out loud here.

the lcd monitors, do they have a hdmi input, or at least dvi?

if so, I thought of an idea. Tie a raspberry pi to it. do some catchy random graphic stuff in color, to get them to come over closer,

and then tie a proximity sensor to it, when they get closer, change it to "Hi welcome to heatsync labs" and do a small presentation about HSL and then when they walk away resume the random color graphics.

What kind of sensor would we be talking about that would do that?

I know I could write something in python to do that.

Detecting distance can. Be done with IR or sonar easly. IR is a point sensor but sonar is an area sensor. Sonar wouls be mush better. If you can do I2C then there are some sensors that would work for this. What range are you looking to detect people?

wide beam would be better, so I assume the 1000 would be the one your looking for.

this will work for people. especially here in AZ where your not covered in layers of padded clothing for warmth. 

this one even has an analog output to make using it very easy.

simple to use.  supply power to it (clean 5V) and wait for the 250mS start up and the 100mS first reading. then it will update the analog output every 49mS (~20.4 times a second)

Interesting concept. I was thinking more along the lines of visualizations that encourage other people to engage with the laser user, and less about tracking interactions. Perhaps some sort of information card about the current user, and a screen cap of their cut file. Just thinking out loud though.

The issue with that is tracking.  Is there something with that information present so a simple username is all that is required or are you going to require that information to me typed in prior to the laser starting?. 

all very doable but if it is too time consuming then I would be surprised it would be filled out correctly.

BUT that would be a very easy way to promote more interaction while one is using the laser.

I would still like to use one as an interactive display for the window if anyone is interested in helping.

Also would be cool to have a kiosk inside with a seamless interface to help visitor/members get a look at data statistics, documentation blah blah. That would become an ongoing project. Wouldn't mind donating a spare leap motion for that.

I can confirm one is dead, but I'm stealing its casing to use on the guts of another one that works for a another window display :)

There's still two more up there that might work.

Also, I got it to run nicely at 1280x768.  Not sure what the native resolution really is.

Oh, you got it at 1280? I couldn't get mine to go past 1024, had to change the pixel aspect ratio to make the front sign not stretchy.

They're up there to get used in cool things, glad to see you using them :)
