Yes yes yes and yes. I'd like at least one in the front for some interactive html5/mobile stuff for people walking by.
Detecting distance can. Be done with IR or sonar easly. IR is a point sensor but sonar is an area sensor. Sonar wouls be mush better. If you can do I2C then there are some sensors that would work for this. What range are you looking to detect people?
Oh. I figure the catchy graphics would get within 2 ft or so.

Also would be cool to have a kiosk inside with a seamless interface to help visitor/members get a look at data statistics, documentation blah blah. That would become an ongoing project. Wouldn't mind donating a spare leap motion for that.
I would still like to use one as an interactive display for the window if anyone is interested in helping.
