As you've by now seen by Tim's recent post we've sadly just had one of our Champions step down.  And while we'll be sad to see him go, he's moving on to further personal adventures and will be yet another ambassador to the east coast hackerspaces for us.  It's also a great opportunity for those that might be interested in running for the next elections to get some experience in. (Reminder:  Volunteering/Experience can be gained without being in a board position as well.  Check our events every month for these volunteer opportunities.)

Per the bylaws:

"In the event that an officer of the Board of Directors becomes incapacitated, deceased, zombified, becomes a vampire, or resigns from office, a quorum of remaining officers in the Board of Directors shall elect a replacement interim-officer at the Board of Directors meeting following the resignation. An interim-officer's term shall be effective from the day of election by the Board of Directors to the remainder of the outgoing officer's elected term."

A few of you in Tim's thread had mentioned interest in fulfilling the interim position of Champion until October elections.  I would like this thread to be set aside for those of you interested to post your platforms.

To allow the community time to discuss the options available before we vote in a new board member let's shoot for the June 20th Hack Your Hackerspace to have the community election.  The winner of this election will be proposed to the board for them to vote in at a special board meeting called post the election.

Who's interested?  Why?  What would you volunteer to do in this position?

I said in the other thread that I'd love to help with this position.

As far as posting what I want to do...  I'd much rather people vote for me based on the things that they've actually *seen* me do, as opposed to things I'm going to tell them about.

I could make up a bunch of stuff here about how great I am, or things I *want* to do, but those words are meaningless.  I said during board elections last year that holding the title of "champion" wasn't much going to change my feelings or actions towards the lab.  As far as I'm concerned, I've been "championing" the lab since I started participating a few years ago.

So as far as the election goes: I'd love to help because there is a thing that needs to be helped with, but it isn't like I've been holding my volunteerism hostage and waiting for a board title to Be Excellent.

If the community wants to give me a title, I would *gladly* accept it, but it won't change anything.  I'll keep "championing" the lab regardless.

As far as additional responsibilities, particularly coming to board meetings: I think I've missed 3 hack your hackerspaces in the last year.  One for sure was because I was really, really sick, and the others were because I was out of town (Burning Man, grandmother's funeral).  I don't think that board meetings would be any different.

We actually need a correction on the date. The 20th of June is NOT a HYH night.  The 27th would be more appropriate

Aye.  I just updated the calendar to reflect this.  The elections will be on the 27th of June.

Counter proposal - We leave the position unfilled until the regular election.

The bylaws state we can have one or two Champions. By leaving the position unfilled, we return to an odd number of board members assuring there are no tie votes.

This is already an option for the vote.  The bylaws state:

Organization - Item 5

"For elections pertaining to an office which allows the election of multiple officers in its office, an explicit “ABSTAIN” vote may be accounted as a vote of no confidence for any candidate, and shall be counted no differently than a vote for a candidate, which an election victory for abstain votes resulting in an office vacancy."
