(virtual) Hack Your Hackerspace

2020/07/23

Attendance

  • 13 members / 10 card holders.

Old business

Wiki

  • Currently in housekeeping mode.  Some content and organization but not much activity.

  • Last discussions on upgrades stalled out at the discussion of hosting/VMs

  • Jot would like to work on improving the vinyl cutter documentation (ala what was done for the lasers), but needs someone to help get him started.

  • Action:  Jot to reach out on Groups/Slack to move forward on vinyl station documentation

API

  • No changes

Leak over the window

  • David talked with landlord

  • She says we're supposed to maintain it

  • He countered with it was existing problem with pipes

  • The problem is not on the roof.  The problem is where the roof piping connects to building piping.  We have kept the roof clean.  It's actually because of the old pipes that are becoming separated.

  • Landlord to contact her son

  • Actions:  Continue to follow-up with the landlord.

Operations manager

  • Nate has received only one person interested in the job.  If you're interested, reach out to Nate.

  • Actions:  If you’re interested in the Operations Manager role, contact Nate.

New business

Funding

  • Might be possible to write a grant for additional funding.  David has done some work on providing information on revenue losses.

  • Actions:  Jaimie and David to work on writing a grant proposal

Finance update

  • We have been doing well.  Had been growing savings.  Had been gaining more members than losing.  Since this started we've only been losing members.  We only lost a handful at the beginning.  In the past two months we've had more people cancelling memberships.  Some are long term, some are due to them not working.  But since we're not attracting new members our losses are building up.

  • We are likely at the stage that we’re spending more than we’re bringing in, and if we’re not, we will be in the next month or two.

  • Hard dollar numbers were provided to the board and discussed, but not included in the minutes.

Trello

  • Question regarding the todo list on Trello.  Some people have time, but not sure where to start.

  • Coordinate with Austin

  • Actions: Nate will review the board and clean it up.  A lot of those were tasks from moving.

Proposals

Laptops

  • The initial proposal was to approve the purchase of 10 laptops at a maximum cost of $9000.  The goal is to improve the lab and provide the necessary systems for teaching classes across a variety of subjects.

  • Proposal was amended to approve the purchase of 12 laptops at a maximum cost of $4500.

Discussion

There was a really healthy discussion that encompassed a number of items.

  • Given our financial position does it make sense to spend the money right now?

    • Discussion moved from the purchase of new systems to the refurbished systems, given the price differential.

    • Proposal modified to max at $4500.

  • If we postpone the purchase, will someone (e.g. Cpro) have the time to do the work on them?

    • Estimate is ~30 hours of work.

    • Cpro has time now but feels like it would be unlikely once everything is lifted.

  • Are they upgradeable?

    • Yes.  Can go upto 16GB of memory

  • What is the warranty on the batteries?

    • Systems have a 90 day battery warranty and a one year system warranty

  • What about purchasing a smaller number (e.g. 5)

    • Concern was that will result in us being in the same place we are now.  Multiple models that require more maintenance and are inconsistent.

  • What are the plans for securing the systems?

    • That would be covered in another proposal, but the discussion has already been kicked off.  The additional cost for security for the systems is expected to be between $1-$20 per laptop

  • What about going with desktops and creating a computer lab?

    • Primary concern is space.  There is not enough room to create a dedicated lab, and the existing tables are used for art and other stations.

    • Desktops also represent a harder to maintain system (dust, size, etc)

Final vote

  • Yes: 9

  • Abstain: 4

Result

Proposal passes.

Station reports

Overall Comment

When you're sponsoring please make sure that you see that people are keeping everything clean.

3D printer

Ender 5 working.  Need to get signage up.  Bed levelers still in hold.  Not building the second printer until we have the BL.  Ultimaker is running again, but it's not doing the best results.  Ran ok with PETG.  Replaced nozzle, fixed extruder feeder but it's stringing.

Laser

There has been significant maintenance.  Nate C posted pictures of all the maintenance to the google groups.  The small laser has been getting out of alignment and it appears to be user caused. Posted some warnings on it.

Sewing station

Cleaned up the sewing station and it looks good.  Something to think of down the road, we've been dealing with a serger problem that has parts we can't get.  Might need to replace.

Art

Everything looks really good.
