Hey, lab.  This is a sad email to write.

I don't want to post this person's full name, because google.  If you don't know who I'm talking about (I think everybody who comes to the lab at this point does, which is why an email like this is unfortunately necessary), ask me privately.

I propose that we revoke D's card access.  This isn't a ban, this isn't telling somebody that they can't come in during open hours, this isn't taking away their membership, this isn't saying that D is a bad guy or anything like that, this is just saying that we no longer think this person is somebody who should have 24/7 access to HSL.  In this case it's because they don't seem to agree with heatsync labs' mission.

In my opinion, HSL is an *extremely* inclusive space.  But part of that inclusivity means that everybody is can decide to exclude themselves.  I believe that this person has chosen to exclude themselves.

I would honestly rather there not be any discussion on this thread.  If you want to discuss broad concepts about HSL's mission, memberships, etc, please do it on the other thread I posted about that.  Again this isn't about D being a bad guy, and I don't want it to turn into people bashing him.  I would much prefer we all discuss this at the next HYH meeting.

Thanks,
Ryan

I support the removal of D's card access.

However I want to be clear that having a different view is not reason to remove access. If someone has a different view and expresses them respectfully that is fine.

D's actions have been disruptive. I'll bring up the specifics at the meeting.

I really don't know anything about this person or the situation, but do want to thank you guys for handling the situation in a positive way.

Things like this (dealing with membership) are very difficult, and you guys are handling it effectively as board members.

Kudos for your professionalism (and thanks again for being board members and doing the hard stuff to keep HS on the right track).

Just a procedural note from the wiki:

Termination of Membership

  • The Board of Directors may terminate the membership of a member at a Board Meeting with cause by consensus vote.
  • Notice shall be given by any method reasonably calculated to provide actual notice to the member. The member shall be given an opportunity to be heard, either orally or in writing, within 7 business days of the effective date of the termination. The hearing shall be held, or the written statement considered, by the Board of Directors.

Good point, however this isn't a termination of membership, just a revoking of 24/7 access. As a privileged access granted by the HYH process, it makes sense that revocation of the same should be as well. 24/7 access is not a guaranteed right of membership.

I think of this much like laser cutter or metalworking access. If we require some level of check-out/demonstrated competency to trust an individual with access, then the same body granting that access (tool station heads, HYH, or the board) should be able to revoke it. Whereas the board grants memberships and voting privilege, the board should be the body to revoke that. Since HYH grants 24/7 access then HYH should be able to revoke it.

While I don't think this is spelled out in the bylaws, because fortunately we've never had to do it, it makes perfect sense to me. Otherwise HSL could be convening the board to revoke anything.
