I'd like to propose a reevaluation of our library at HSL. I've never seen anyone use it nor add to it, and I think that's a shame. (If you do use it or have recently added to it, let me know).

So, I'd like to make two suggestions:
  1. We should expand our physical library
  2. We should start a digital library
Expanding our physical library would mean getting a bigger bookshelf, which might be difficult. But starting a digital library doesn't seem like it would have any complications. Are there problems with starting a digital library that I'm not considering? Or do we perhaps already have a digital library-esque space that I don't know about?

This is a great idea, I have recently looked into archiving all my physical reference material to a digital format and uploading it to my NAS. It's been a minute since I've even looked at our current bookshelf so not sure how much/what is on there.

Thanks for creating a proposal about the library, Arnob!

I'm hesitant to voice an opinion since I have been unable to be a
contributing member lately, but I will, anyway:

It may help to remove any programming book that was copyrighted more
than 5 years ago (or whatever) and is not of significant historical
value (eg: I have a cherished 1st edition of the Apache Server
Commentary book).

The microcontroller / SBC folks could probably set some kind of similar
threshold.

JM2C - most of those books are only of fleeting relevance, and LLMs have
made them even more ... ummm ... iconic of a brief moment in history. :)

For people unaware the library is listed on the wiki, though who knows if people have added more since Nate scanned barcodes.

I'm of the mind to reduce the size of the library and send any that aren't already available at Open Library to their book drive. Having them get scanned and shared for everyone seems ideal. However I know there are definitely some station specific topics that would be good to keep in physical form.

Sometimes cool things just happen, but usually you have to plan them.
