Does anyone know the approximate dimensions of the mural space at the new location—and/or have a photo of that space? I am interested in applying to do the mural today, but there is no info in the application about the scale of the painting.

Thanks :-)

Hi Heather! There are a number of walls in the space — once the artist is selected, the artist will define how much of the wall will be painted in conjunction with Heatsync members. I've attached a photo of the new space. I'd guess it's likely to be above the orange line -- but which section (or sections) will be worked out in concert with the artist / community.

Hi lab, I have not seen any news on this in a very long time. Did we have many artists apply? Do we get to see their work? Was a decision made? Will the art be presented to the community at large before being painted? I'm very excited about this!

Yes!

26 muralists applied. The muralist was selected by a group from RAIL and HSL -- the selected muralist is David Osowski -- DSKI One -- he lives in the neighborhood.

We met him to do a walk through about mid-July and there should be more information about the mural / answers to the rest of the questions you have very soon!

26! WOW! Is there a way we can see the submissions?

Sure -- here's a "private" link to muralists who responded to the RFQ (not sure it should be 100% public).

The rubric for selection was as follows:
- Complete Application, Submitted On Time
- Artist's stated interest in a Mural at Heatsync
- Artist's relationship to Heatsync Labs, Maker/Hackerspaces, Downtown Mesa, or Entrepreneurship
- Artist's work is complementary to the mission/space of Heatsync
- Relevant Past Experience
- Artist's style would look great in Heatsync

I guess I should have posted the muralist announcement that I sent to all the applicants here. Here it is now:

Good afternoon!

First of all, we wish to thank each and every of the twenty-six applicants that responded to this mural opportunity. There was a huge variety of styles and experience -- and we are incredibly impressed with the talent that was shown through everyone’s submissions. Thank you all, and we know that you all will continue to do amazing work in our valley, across the state, the US, and the world!

We know that the most important part of creating a community that supports artists is bringing people together, celebrating art, and finding funds to support artists and art projects across the valley. We will be sure to keep your contact information for future projects that are available (actually, here’s another RFP right now -- up to $45,000!). I am sure we will be working with you in the future!

Selecting our finalist was very difficult. It took the selection committee over two-and-a-half hours of thoughtful discussion and deliberation to pick the artist or team from the twenty-six amazing applications.

On behalf of RAILmesa and HeatSync Labs, we are excited to announce DSKI One as our project artist.

About the artist:
David "Dski One" Osowski is a self taught artist born & raised in Arizona. He grew up immersed in the world of skateboarding, graffiti art & hip hop music, and he weaves these influences into his art.  Whether it's outdoor aerosol murals, canvas or vinyl toys, he is known for his masterful use of color.  David began painting murals at the young age of 10, and his blackbook and rattling cans quickly became his everyday. He really enjoys working on a large scale, which stemmed from his early days of murals, but he has expanded his passions more recently to acrylic and oil on canvas, and airbrushing custom vinyl kaiju toys!  His home base is Lulubell Toy Bodega in Mesa, AZ, where his originals, prints & custom toys can always be found, but he also participates in dozens of gallery shows across the country each year! Stay in touch with all his latest projects on the blog page.

David resides in Mesa, AZ, with his wife, 3 kids, 4 dogs, 4 chickens , and a variety of saltwater creatures. His love of animals and the environment are evident not only in his paintings, but his generous charity projects as well. David is an active contributing artist to PangeaSeed, whose proceeds from art sales go directly to ocean conservation efforts.

Please be sure to stop in at HeatSync Labs to take advantage of the amazing tools and resources that area available, and please mark your calendars for a community celebration on October 13, 2018. Live music, art, food, and making! More details and opportunities will be announced soon.

Of course, we need to thank the sponsors who made this opportunity possible. This Project is supported by a grant from the Made on Main Street program, administered by the National Main Street Center, Inc. and funded by OneMain Financial.

Again, thank you to everyone who applied, and we look forward to seeing and working with you in the future!
