Hey lab!  Have you heard about meshtastic?  It’s a really cool LoRa messaging system that lets us all talk to each other using our own, totally grassroots comms infrastructure.

Basically: little (often) esp32 LoRA boards talk to each other, bounce messages to each other, and make a very cool, very cyberpunk network that covers a lot of the city.

Me and some other meshers are going to come to the lab next week at 6:00pm to show off hardware and chat with each other in person. If you’re interested in this tech, come by!  I’ll hang out until at least 7:30.

(And btw if anybody has calendar access and could put this on the calendar I would appreciate it!)

Do you have any hardware suggestions so we can join the fun? I know there have been many iterations, and what was cool 4 years ago is way more useful and practical with some of the advances they have made. Did the first devices require a laptop for full use, but now they have screens and buttons, allowing direct communication from the device . . . something like that?

Heltec v4 is a really common and good one.  I have a bunch of HV3s, and gonna flash some old HV2 clones today that are supposed to work.

All really cheap stuff that seems to work pretty well, but the hv3/4 by far seems the most common.

Ryan,
What day is this. I can add it on the calendar. Just make sure nothing else is coinciding that would conflict with this.

Ryan,
I'm really interested in Meshtastic and haven't had a chance to dive into it. I'll definitely come out.

I've got it added on the calendar as Meshtastic Meetup with the first post as the description.

Looks like the Heltec v4s come as boards without a housing. But there's no soldering required to get up and running, right? Just connect a compatible antenna and battery, flash firmware, and 3d-print yourself a case later?
