Hi Bruce,

The costs would go up dramatically after a collapse of any one of the five Arctic tipping elements*, each likely to be triggered (to the point of no return) by reaching 2C, if not before.  This is why it is so urgent to start applying cooling interventions to refreeze the Arctic, even before applying them to other parts of the planet.

Since 1980 the Arctic has been warming around four times faster than the global average.  Five elements of the Arctic have been categorised as tipping elements in the Earth System:

• the Arctic sea ice; 
• the Greenland Ice Sheet; 
• the Arctic permafrost, both on land and under the seabed; 
• the polar jet stream; 
• the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

The “What If” Explorer was designed to help people understand

1. The complexities of emissions pathways
2. How various factors influence the expected temperature increase in 2100
3. The effort required for various temperature mitigation strategies
4. The likely costs associated with an emissions pathway
5. The tradeoffs among reasonable emissions pathways
6. What a reasonable emissions pathway might be for planning purposes

 

The “What If” Explorer uses a “scenario emulator” to project the temperature increase from 2025 for either a “CO2 Only” emissions pathway or a pathway that includes the contribution to warming from other greenhouse gas emissions, aerosols, albedo changes, etc.  By examining the output from two climate models (The IPCC’s AR6 and En-ROADs) formulas were developed to

1. Calculate the expected increase in atmospheric CO2 based on CO2 emissions
2. Calculate the expected radiative forcing from atmospheric CO2
3. Calculate the expected radiative forcing from other greenhouse gas emissions, aerosols, albedo changes, etc.
4. Calculate the temperature increase from the total radiative forcing

I missed this. I was attending a covering climate Now briefing on covering the COP, which included some background on the conferences and how progress has been waylaid over economic narratives... in spite of many of us being fully aware that the cost of the climate crisis will be far greater than the cost of adequate action. 

Bottom line is I am curious, is there any progress on getting this tool utilized during the conference?
