HPAC COP28 Debrief: Viktor Jaakkola of Operaatio Arktis and Hugh Hunt of the Cambridge Centre for Climate Repair

Professor Hugh Hunt is Deputy Director of the Centre for Climate
Repair. He is Professor of Dynamics and Vibrations in the Department of
Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He has been a lecturer here
since 1989, shortly after obtaining his PhD in Engineering from
Cambridge. He is also a College Lecturer and Director of Studies in
Engineering at Trinity College. His principal research interest is in albedo
enhancement for climate intervention - "how can we refreeze the Arctic?"
Within the Centre for Climate Repair he is most interested in the
engineering aspects of Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) and Stratospheric
Aerosol Injection (SAI). Other interests include railway noise and
vibration, gyroscopes and boomerangs, wave power, renewable energy,
tower clocks and the vibration of bell towers.

The dilemma is that absent the kind of very well funded lobbying that Robert advocated - that I completely with -it will likely take another decade or two to create the social license to get repair/cooling accepted by the climate decision makers…and the likelihood that the world will have the political, economic and supply chain stability to effectively implement repair at the scale needed

I spoke at the ExxonMobil shareholder meeting back in 2016 (see https://blog.ucsusa.org/guest-commentary/challenging-exxonmobil-ceo-rex-tillerson-on-climate-change/) and by chance got a chance to talk to Rex Tillerson —so before Trump appointed him Secretary of State. His rationale was that they (ExxonMobil) felt they had an obligation to protect and provide the right of the young people growing up in Africa and South Asia to have access to ready transportation and, in his view, fossil fuels were essential to providing the young people access to transportation.
