About the Talk
Measuring methane emissions from Arctic ecosystems requires accessing remote locations. This fieldwork, while challenging, provides essential ground-based data to compare with models of these important climate-sensitive, carbon-rich regions. Conducting this research naturally involves training the next generation of Arctic researchers. In this talk, Dr. Ruth Varner of University of New Hampshire will highlight what we are learning about these changing landscapes, as well as the impact of engaging students in complex, collaborative research projects.

Following her talk, Dr. Varner will answer audience questions. This talk is free and open to the public.

About the Speaker
Dr. Ruth Varner is the Interim Director of the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space and a Professor of Biogeochemistry in the Department of Earth Sciences and the Earth Systems Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. Her research focuses on trace gas emissions from terrestrial, aquatic and human-managed ecosystems. Over the past several decades she has established and maintained long-term measurements of methane emissions from wetlands and permafrost peatlands. She currently collaborates with microbial ecologists, remote sensing specialists, and modelers to address questions of scaling processes from regions to the globe. She integrates graduate and undergraduate students into her research and outreach.

This event is presented as part of AGCI's Walter Orr Roberts Memorial Lecture series. It is being held in conjunction with AGCI's upcoming workshop, Methane Alert: An Integrated Measurement Framework to Monitor Increasing Natural Methane Emissions.
