Hi everybody,

According to the research team who wrote this article, the reduction in cloud cover is now understood to be the single biggest contributor to Earth’s increased absorption of solar energy in the 21st century, helping to explain why global warming has accelerated so dramatically in recent years.

The loss of latent heat export into space caused by diminished cloud cover is not mentioned but comes with the package of diminished cloud production.

All healthy ecosystems generate clouds and rain through evapotranspiration and bioaerosol release, sustaining the water cycle and cooling the climate. The relation between the warming of the planet and the degradation of the biosphere is getting clearer by the day.

Best,

Thanks for this summary of recent key papers, Paul!

Just a short comment on Panama upwelling failure you mentioned. You implied that failure of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama is novel this year, but in fact upwelling is highly episodic and variable from year to year, and there have been increasing failures of upwelling in recent decades because the surface hot water layer is just too thick and buoyant for nutrient rich cold water to reach the surface. Upwelling causes the massive green phytoplankton blooms that attract whales who migrate all the way from Antarctica for the feeding season!

Thank you Paul,

yes, saw it. Have been following (most of) your videos for what, a decade now? Hope you can look at our paper again, still have to respond to David Price, but looking at climate change from a Lovelockian perspective has been very helpful to me. The impact of biology is grossly underestimated in the whole debate, while we actually say that the atmosphere, weather and climate are products of the biosphere, not accidental circumstances life has to deal with. If our thesis is true, it opens up new paths to fight the crisis,
