----- Original Message ----- From: IKP-National Sent: 05/14/2012 10:15 AM PDT Subject: “The Weight of the Nation” Documentary Begins Tonight An Important Announcement from Raymond J. Baxter, PhD, Senior Vice President, Community Benefit, Research and Health Policy; Jack Cochran, MD, Executive Director, The Permanente Federation; and John August, Executive Director, Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions Beginning today, May 14, The Weight of the Nation four-part documentary will air on Home Box Office (HBO) and will be available for viewing free of charge on HBO.com. We encourage all of you to watch the documentary series with your family and friends. Kaiser Permanente has been working vigorously to bring this urgent and critical public health crisis — the national epidemic of obesity and excess weight — to the forefront of our country’s attention. We believe these documentaries and the campaign provide a unique window of time to spotlight the severity of the issue, to showcase strategies that work and, most important, to catalyze action that accelerates progress in the battle. The first two episodes of the documentary will air back to back. In most markets, it is airing at 8 p.m. ET/MT/PT (7 p.m. CT). Please check your local TV listings to confirm broadcast time in your area. Episodes three and four will air the following evening. For this documentary, HBO has opened its signal, which enables local cable and satellite providers to make it available to all customers, not just HBO subscribers, if they choose. Some providers are doing that, and some others are putting the films online on their own websites. We suggest you check with your local cable or satellite service for availability. In addition, all four of the films will be available at HBO’s site (www.hbo.com/theweightofthenation) when the series airs at 8 pm ET. The Weight of the Nation documentary is a springboard for an extensive, long-term public health campaign designed to raise national awareness and engage communities. The films contain critical and useful information we can apply to our own lives and share with our families, members, patients, and communities. Along with HBO, our partners in this project are the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. The documentary films dramatize the issues and challenges identified in the IOM's recent evidence-based report, Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention. The IOM report identifies key prevention strategies to address the nation’s obesity epidemic, which draw upon the work Kaiser Permanente has been doing. . The Weight of the Nation films include case studies; uplifting personal stories of people, families, and community members who are tackling weight issues; and interviews with our nation’s leading experts.
In addition to these first four films, a series of three episodes about, and for, young people will be previewed on May 16. Please check your local listings for details. Another 12 short films about specific topics, such as the stigma society places on people struggling with obesity, workplace wellness, and more, will be available on HBO’s site (www.hbo.com/theweightofthenation).
