Your sword will probably be your first defense against the hostile mobs of Minecraft. Your first sword will probably be made out of wood, but if you've already gathered cobblestone or iron you can skip ahead to the section on better swords.

When crafting with wood planks, you can use any kind of wood planks, such as oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, bamboo, crimson, warped or cherry planks. In our example, we are using oak planks.

When making a wooden sword, it is important that the wood planks and the stick are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. There should be 1 wood planks placed in the middle box in the first row. In the second row, 1 wood planks should be in the middle box. In the third row, 1 stick should be in the middle box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a wooden sword.

Durability represents how long the item will last. For tools, weapons and transportation, durability is the number of useful actions before the item is destroyed. For armor items, durability is the number of hits (that can be blocked by armor) before the item is destroyed. So the higher the durability number, the longer the item will last.

If your kids are as enthralled with the pixelated world of Minecraft as mine are then they will LOVE this DIY project and FREE printable. You also may want to check out our Printable Pixelated Pickaxe

These are awesome! I wasn't able to download the pdf, but used print preview first (to make sure my computer did not resize the images) and then was able to print them all. I'm making them for my son's 8th birthday party. He will be so excited. Thanks ?

Thank you! Thank you! Using for a party for my 6 year old this weekend. Only suggestion is that I tried the mod podge and the ink ran so that might not be best idea. Thank you so much though for the idea and the template!!!! My son is thrilled to have swords at his party.

What size foam board did you use? I am doing this project this weekend ? I want them to be pretty thick, but my husband is worried about the difficulty if we go with a thicker board ? Any advice is welcomed ?

This turned out cool looking sword, however we are planing to make more and this time we will glue one layer of foam on one side and other side where you hold the sword , because that is the narrower part, even just by holding it and pretending like you are fighting it bended.

Hi! Just wanted to say thank you SO MUCH for posting the templates and instructions for these awesome Minecraft swords! We are getting reading to host a Minecraft themed birthday party for my 9 year old son and have been making these swords as favors. He thinks they are the coolest thing ever! Much appreciated. ?

I have two kids that love Minecraft and they both wanted swords. I decided to make them some out of EVA foam floor mats and I documented my process. I will be honest they were not thrilled at first since they didn't look exactly like the ones in the store but after a few minutes of playing with them they didn't care anymore and started making up different Minecraft quests and games to role play. When ever we have any friends or family kids come over and they see the swords and they always ask me to make them one. So all in all I would say they are a hit.

First I found an image online of a Minecraft Sword so that I could make a template from it. I used my printer to print an enlarged version of the sword. Basically I used a setting called "Tiling/Poster" to print out the right size sword. This took some trial and error but I ended up with a sword that was 21 inches long. After printing out the template I taped the pieces together and used my razor to cut out the template.

With the template cut out I traced it on to the foam mats using a marker. If you plan on only making one sword then a paper template is fine. But if you are going to make more than one I suggest tracing the template on to a thick piece of cardboard and making the template out of that instead.

I was planning on making more than one sword so I opted for the cardboard template. To keep the template in place I used some thumb tacks, this is optional, and stuck the template to the foam mats, then I traced it with a marker.

I used my razor to cut out the shape. I do this twice but I use my first foam sword cutout as the template for the other side. I do this in case there was any variation in my cutting this way the two sides will match up and line up better when glueing.

To reinforce the swords I used a 1/4 wooden dowel. I made the dowel about 19 inches long and rounded off the ends, with sand paper, so they wouldn't poke through the foam once glued inside. I used the dowel to mark the cut line on the inside of the foam. I set the depth of my razor to less than the thickness of the foam. Then with the razor at about a 45 degree angle I cut a "V" shaped groove in to the foam to accept the wooden dowel.

I test fit the dowel to make sure there was no bulge in the foam and then hot glued it in place. I used the blunt end of my razor blade to push the dowel in to the groove. Next I glued both halves together with the hot glue gun. An alternative to the hot glue gun would be to use contact cement which would work just as well if not better. You just have to be very careful when using contact cement because once the two pieces make contact they are stuck and there is no room for adjustment. Once the two halves were glued I used a couple of heavy books to weigh them down for about an hour.

As you can see in the picture I also shrunk the pattern and made them small daggers from the scrap EVA foam pieces. This was a fairly easy project that can be done in an afternoon. I hope you enjoyed this instructable and found it helpful.

Then the craft was as simple as providing the kids with the squares of foam, double-stick tape, and pickaxe and sword cardboard shapes. Just FYI, the shapes are kind of flimsy, and the pickaxe shapes are less sturdy than the sword shapes. But this project was about the fun, not durability, so I didn't bother reinforcing the cardboard foundations. If I were making a Minecraft sword for a Halloween costume, though, I'd definitely do something to add some rigidity.

Why, yes, I DID find it perfectly acceptable to make wooden swords for children. Yes, they played with them. Yes, they pretended to fight with them. Yes, the swords have pointy parts. Yes, some of the kids skinned their knuckles.

acrylic paint. A lot of the fun of this project, for the kids, was painting their own swords. They fell right to it when the party started, and returned to it in between each of the Minecraft party games.

2. Trace the template onto the wood. I made nine of these little monsters, so I puzzle pieced them in so that I could fit them all onto this single piece of wood. Since I was going to cut them out with a jigsaw, anyway, it was fine.

My kiddo decided he wanted to be Steve for Halloween. The Minecraft: Steve Cardboard Head (just a cardboard box printed with squares) sells for upwards of $25. I figured out how to make my own (see super-easy step-by-step instructions here).

Thank you so much for the instructions and downloads. I tried to print the sword at Fed Ex print shop and they wanted written permission from you to print them!! Yeesh! Luckily a family member was able to print them for me from their office printer! I also got the head on clearance in toy department @ Walmart for $7. Thanks again for an awesome costume on a budget!

He has everything he needs to live in the Minecraft world: a bed, a house, and food. Steve likes to spend his mornings in the NCP village and trade his wheat for emeralds, armor, books, swords, and food.

Your Printouts in picture and your Sword and Pickaxe look blue. But, the printout links and pdfs turns out in green. Why does it do that? Why those links are not in blue? My son wants to be steve this Halloween and He got Steve head from his friend so now I just need to make weapons. Please guide me or email me the pdfs which shows blue colors.

After crafting a sword, holding it in your main-hand for around 2 seconds will transform into a blade assigned to a random Breathing Style. This will also give you a crow which you can right click to get the coordinates of certain structures. It'll also give you demon slayer armor, which is better than netherite armor defense wise (though you wont get that extra knockback resistance). The type of blade the sword changes into is random and all swords will change into this same type as well. Think of it like the type of sword is matched to you as a player instead of the sword itself. However the type you have will change randomly after death or (from what I've gathered) a certain amount of time passes, this is not however a dependable method as currently the amount of time needed is unknown and could be changed in the future as it feels almost more like a bug than a feature. All swords also scale with the leveling system (ranks) with strength making the breathing along with the normal attacks do more damage.
