「Cloud Computing Enables Consumer-Centered Healthcare」

Broadband Internet technologies and social media are empowering
patients and their loved ones, however significant regulatory,
compliance, and personal-information-protection problems need to be
solved to enable wide adoption of cloud computing by the healthcare
industry. Our October presentation will give ICT professionals a
managerial perspective on trends in cloud computing and consumer-
centered healthcare, with a focus on governance, risk and compliance
(GRC) management. Some practical case studies will also illustrate the
business potential of developing strategic alliances between ICT
professionals and healthcare entrepreneurs, to utilize cloud computing
in healthcare.

Description: This lecture will discuss the impact of healthcare policy
on the economy, including issues of productivity of the workforce and
economic growth. Another issue that will be discussed is patients'
rights and the role of patients in healthcare policymaking in Japan.
Speaker Profile Mr. Wolf has been the Japan Representative of the
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) since
2006. His career has focused on trade and Asia. He has worked as a
diplomat in Tokyo, a trade negotiator at the United States Trade
Representative (USTR), senior staff member in the United States
Senate, Vice President of Eastman Kodak in Tokyo, Director of
Government Relations for Motorola in Japan, and representative of the
air express delivery industry in Asia, based in Singapore. He is
active in the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and served in the
past as a Commissioner and as Vice Chairman of the Japan-U.S.
Friendship Commission. One of his personal enduring accomplishments on
the Friendship Commission was to create the Japan Forum, a moderated
listserve on US/Japan relations. His undergraduate degree was in
mathematics and his master's degrees were in International Relations
and in Pacific Islands Studies.

Market factors and the opportunity associated with the health IT
provisions of the ARRA stimulus bill have driven strong demand for
ambulatory clinical electronic medical record (EMR) systems. Many U.S.
ambulatory practices are beginning the process of installing,
upgrading or adding functionality to support ambulatory EMRs and meet
the requirements for meaningful use in order to qualify for stimulus
payments. The questions faced by EMR implementers include:

- What functionality matters - and what doesn't?
- What tradeoffs need to be made? And what tradeoffs should be
avoided?
- Does spending less mean getting less?
- How do I tell if my organization and the vendor are a good fit?
- How can I prepare my organization for EMR implementation? What needs
to happen first?
- What can I do to help ensure my organization is able to demonstrate
meaningful use and quality for ARRA subsidies?

While all organizations will face initial implementation hurdles, the
fit of the application, vendor and implementation process with the
organization can dramatically lessen this impact, and drive early
benefits. It's becoming increasingly clear that EMRs are not one-size-
fits-all, and that taking the specific needs of an organization into
account is essential to making projects successful, driving both
eligibility for stimulus payments and meaningful results for the
practice. Alignment of the provider's strategic goals with that of the
vendor and making smart tradeoffs during the selection process can
determine the success or failure of EMR implementation.
