Dear networkers,

I hope you are all well and got some time to relax (and cool down) over KNY.

In yesterday morning’s paper, I saw the following article and I would like to ask if any of you have a lead to the authors of the study?

"Cambodian Children Suffering Due to Early Sweet Tooth
A new study published this month based on a survey of 294 mothers in Phnom Penh shows that the city’s babies and young children are getting hooked on processed food and drinks."

Thanks in advance, with cool autumnal wishes from Melbourne.

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Can’t answer your question but Action Against Hunger did a survey earlier this year in Preah Vihear that also identified snack foods as an issue in the context of poor quality diets of children under 5. It seems the easy availability of snack foods everywhere and all year compared to fresh food, combined with reported high maternal workloads leaving little time for food preparation, might be significant. Some respondents also cited their difficulty in dealing with the tantrums when children don’t get snack foods. This was one of a number of areas where even when parental knowledge was good it was not being put into practice.

A few years ago there was concern about school teachers selling snacks and fizzy drinks to supplement their salaries and whether they could be persuaded to sell fresh fruit instead. But it seems the problem needs to be addressed pre-school.

Best regards

David
