Dear colleagues,

While 2018 ended with several inspired conferences such as MenstruAction, a summit on menstrual health in Nepal, GAVI’s midterm review and the Asia Regional Dialogue on sexual and reproductive health and rights, 2019 is off to a good start with the release of a first ‘discussion paper’ in the German Health Practice Collection: A systems perspective on Universal Social Protection.

A systems perspective on Universal Social Protection - Towards life-long equitable access to comprehensive social protection for all

In 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights promised comprehensive social protection for all. Seventy years later, this pledge is far from fulfilled: An estimated 71% of the world’s population are not adequately covered. The new GHPC discussion paper looks at how the Global Partnership for Universal Social Protection (USP) wants to change this and highlights the questions needing further debate.

MenstruAction: A Summit to ensure that every girl in Nepal can thrive during her period

It is an indication of how far menstrual health issues have come in Nepal that more than 500 participants from all over the country and region attended a Summit hosted by GIZ and the menstrual Health Alliance in Kathmandu on 11th December 2018. Previously shrouded in silence about harmful practices and taboos, menstrual health management has now become a dynamic development issue.

A mid-term review of Gavi’s progress

More than 300 leaders attended a high-level meeting in Abu Dhabi to critically review progress against Gavi’s 2016-2020 commitments. Together they took stock of achievements - 700 million people immunised and 10 million lives saved since 2000, and planned how best to meet the immunisation needs of the world’s poorest countries.

Calling upon governments to uphold their commitments

In November 2018, the Asia Regional Dialogue took place in Bangkok ahead of the Asia Pacific Population Conference Mid-Term Review. Key stakeholders discussed how to make sure that human rights and gender commitments are realised in the region.
