Dear colleagues, As we all adapt to the ‘new normal’ Healthy DEvelopments is breaking new ground: The Healthy DEvelopments podcast series invites colleagues and partners around the world to talk about how they are tackling development challenges. Listen to real stories, intelligent dialogue and experts who bring their subjects to life. The first edition comes from Pakistan - sequels from West Africa and from Nepal are in preparation. Stay tuned! Meanwhile we’re re-vamping our website, making it look ‘cleaner and leaner’, powering up its search engine and adding new visual and interactive features to draw you in. Your editorial team  Maja Opua & Anna von Roenne Current news topics Standing shoulder to shoulder against COVID-19 Last year, as SARS-CoV-2 continued its steady march across the globe, it became clear that no single country will be safe from the virus until all are. As part of Germany’s commitment to solidarity in response to the pandemic, the German Epidemic Preparedness Team (SEEG) supported partners in 13 countries with training and supplies to conduct molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2. More Infection control in Kyrgyz health facilities Healthcare workers in Kyrgyzstan were infected in large numbers during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. With German support, Kyrgyz health facilities are placing new emphasis on water, sanitation, hygiene, waste management and cleaning to stem the spread of infections. This article, the first in a two-part series, focuses on primary health care centers in Osh. More Training hospitals in costing in the midst of a pandemic Despite the huge challenges posed by it, the pandemic has also shown that human beings are adaptable and will find innovative ways of working in the ‘new normal’: Staff of a social health protection project in Pakistan used virtual solutions to implement a complex health costing exercise. Their own and their partners’ determination has led to impressive results. More Re-thinking maternity care in Kyrgyzstan during COVID-19 When COVID-19 hit Kyrgyzstan, healthcare workers providing care to pregnant women and newborns were no longer sure how to do their jobs safely. With German support, teams in maternity hospitals have reorganised the way they work to protect themselves and their patients from COVID-19. This article, the second in a series, explains how. More Hot off the press: State of Economic Inclusion report In times of COVID-19, economic inclusion of the poor and extremely poor is high on governments’ political agenda: What kind of interventions can foster and sustain poor households’ graduation out of poverty? A group of experts assessed 219 economic inclusion programmes in 75 countries. Findings provide insights for further scale-up of approaches that work.
