Download HESP-News Briefing 14/2017 (PDF, 38 pp. 1.7 MB) Dear colleagues, BMZ’s division health, population policy and social protection asked a renowned group of researchers to assess whether, and how, support for local pharmaceutical production could help to strengthen health systems in Africa. The resulting GHPC Evidence Brief highlights how African experts and development partners differ in their perspective on ‘health security’ and challenges external actors to support health-industry linkages to strengthen health systems and improve access to medicines. What is Germany’s role in the global health arena, how has it evolved over the past 10 years and what could and should be its future direction? This Lancet article describes the specific characteristics of Germany’s global health engagement and proposes steps the German government should take to step up as a global health leader. Purdah – the strict separation of women and men in social life – has prohibited a public exchange between them about women’s and girl’s reproductive health and rights. A dialogue project found a way to bridge this divide and - contrary to concerns that the approach might not be suitable for the conservative cultural context - first results exceeded expectations.
