Editorial

Dear Reader,

The Healthy DEvelopments newsletter has a fresh look and a new format! From now on, it will come to you every 4 to 6 weeks, providing you with highlights from the Healthy DEvelopments portal.

(Apologies for the empty issue some of you received yesterday due to a technical hiccup.)

In this issue we cover the recent ‚Lessons for the Future - what East African health workers learned from fighting the Ebola epidemic in West Africa‘ conference and we report on a hackathon on urban health and a session on digital health and development which KfW and GIZ organised at this years World Health Summit.

Don’t miss the feature about recent developments in the Ukrainian HIV response, or this short and impressive video clip: Loveness’ story about her volunteer deployment as a nurse during West Africa’s Ebola epidemic.

Enjoy the reading!

What’s the way forward for digital health in development?

Investments in information technology can strengthen health systems and improve the delivery of health services. KfW hackathon generates innovative urban health solutions

At this year’s World Health Summit, KfW Entwicklungsbank organised a two-day hackathon at which teams of young experts from countries around the world searched for innovative solutions to urban health challenges. At the award ceremony KfW General Manager Joachim Nagel praised the three winning teams, saying that ‘the international community needs innovations like these to tackle the enormous challenges it faces’.

Social protection for people caught up in protracted crises

The number of people forced to leave their homes has reached an all-time high. Fresh and practical solutions to extend social protection to people caught up in the world’s current protracted crises were at the centre of an international conference in Brussels on 28/29 September, organized jointly by UNICEF, German Development Cooperation, EU Commission and other partners.

The HIV response in Ukraine: Back from the brink

Efforts to stem Ukraine’s HIV epidemic suffered a huge setback when social unrest and conflict erupted in 2013 and 2014. While it has yet to regain its former momentum, the HIV response is showing a surprising turnaround, in part due to a joint awareness campaign that is changing the way people think about HIV.
