Hi, Mac, Carlos, Jennifer, Cassie, and All,

The Sustainability Coalition’s Health & Human Services Action Team has been talking about helping community members deal effectively with the impacts of climate change. Here’s what’s been happening:

  • At last Sunday’s “Open Streets” event, our table had a focus on tips for protecting yourself during hot weather. (Jennifer, thank you for sending us the attached handout from OSU! We developed a simple game based on the handout, and those who played the game entered a drawing for a new Hydro Flask water bottle – a $35 value.)
  • I’m on the Ashland Climate Collaborative’s email list, and their most recent issue included a section titled “Disaster Readiness Starts Now”. Please check it out below, and let us know what you think by sending us an email (“Reply to all”).
  • I’d like to propose that we meet soon on my front porch to map out a plan for helping each other and our fellow community members prepare for the heat – and more!

Thanks,

Annette

Disaster Readiness Starts Now

Wildfire season is here, and in Ashland, we know how suddenly a crisis can unfold. The Almeda Fire was a wake-up call, and taught us that preparing now can save lives later. This month, we’re focusing on simple, effective steps you can take to get ready: creating a Go Bag, making an evacuation plan, and staying informed. Disaster preparedness is part of climate resilience. Let’s protect what we love—starting with ourselves and our community.

Lessons Learned from the Almeda Fire

Kelly Burns, Ashland’s Emergency Management Coordinator, reflects on his experience fighting the Almeda Fire — and how the event shaped our City’s approach to emergency response and preparedness.

Get insights about communications systems, evacuation planning, community preparedness, as well as Kelly’s favorite resources, apps, and tools. Read more at the Ashland Climate Collaborative Blog.

Join the #AshlandGoBagChallenge

This July, get your “Go Bags” ready for wildfire season. Every person’s Go Bag will be unique, but may include:

🎒 Important documents
🎒 Medications and first aid supplies
🎒 Water and non-perishable food
🎒 Extra phone charger
🎒 Change of clothes and personal hygiene products
🎒 Pet food and supplies if needed
🎒 Other valuables and irreplaceable items

Ready to join the challenge? 🎒💪

Pack your Go Bag, snap a photo, and tag us on Instagram @ashland_climate or Facebook @AshlandClimate. Use #AshlandGoBagChallenge. On July 31, one participant will win a gift basket!

Make your evacuation plan at this interactive event

Join us July 16 from 6 - 8 pm at the Armory for the final event in the Better Prepared Wildfire Series — hosted by the City of Ashland, Ashland.news, Ashland Together, and the Ashland Climate Collaborative. Walk through what to do before, during, and after an evacuation. Learn how to create an evacuation plan, pack go bags, plan escape routes, and practice real-world scenarios to be ready to act quickly when wildfire threatens. Get Your Yard Sign!

A growing community of Ashlanders are transforming their homes for a healthy future by going “all electric.”

If you’re already on that path or interested, Electrify Ashland Now invites you to inspire your neighbors with a yard sign. Electrification is one of the BEST ways to reduce climate pollution and cool the planet.

Below, John and Michelle display their new yard sign. On their journey, they will put a sticker on the sign for each electric appliance in their home: dryer, fireplace, cooking range, air heating and cooling, and water heater.

Good morning,

Their email looks good, and it looks like they are very active! I think we might include a similar bit about go bags in an upcoming coalition newsletter.

I would be happy to meet with the group soon.

Thank you, Jennifer. I appreciate your prompt reply!

Do the rest of you agree?

  • Should we include a similar article about Go Bags in the Sustainability Coalition’s next E-Update newsletter?
  • Should we sponsor a “Go Bag Challenge”?
  • Should our team meet soon?

Let’s hear from you!

Hi team, I know I have been largely absent for quite some time, my apologies. I do some work around wildfire smoke, so this topic is fairly close to my heart. Ashland has been doing some awesome work in this space, and I really like their resources. Some other resources that you might find helpful, particularly about go-bags, are at the links below:

Building a Go-Kit. These sites all recommend largely the same thing, but there may be minor differences

I’ve also had the opportunity to work with local public health officials, OHA, and OSU extension to make some short infographics if these are helpful. They were created for very specific community ask though, so may not be appropriate in this context:

This is wonderful work. I'm happy to meet. If not already included, we should list cooling shelters in the newsletter. With the warm weather already upon us, it feels like we should have met in the spring.

Thank you, Diana. No apologies needed! As always, you’ve been very busy.

The resources you’ve provided will be extremely helpful. All we need now is a time for the team to meet – either in person or via Zoom – to discuss a game plan.

Hi all-

Thanks, Annette, for getting the conversation started... and to Jennifer, Diana, and all for all the work and ideas!

All looks/sounds great to me!  Excited to support this work.

A few thoughts:
- I'm getting ready to leave town next Monday and will away until 8/9... but please feel free to meet without me while I'm gone and I'll look forward to reconnecting with the group when I'm back
- I've attached some "Plan 9" flyers here in english and spanish that the health department has been using for outreach and people seem to like 😊
- It would be great to reach out to Sierra Anderson from the City and the County Sheriff's Dept for the latest materials, etc that they are using as well!
- Also want to share/add a recent conversation that I had with Steve Starcevich from the Transportation Action Team... we've been scheming for a while around thinking how the two action teams could collaborate together around issues related to health and transportation.  I am planning to meet with him soon after I'm back from vacation and will be excited to share with the group

Thanks, all.  Look forward to being in touch,
Mac

I appreciate there is so much enthusiasm around this topic… I have run into a couple of other groups also interested in doing similar work.
There are some great resources out there; some are rather extensive and take a bit of a commitment to read through and a greater commitment to implement at home or work.

With that in mind I would like to see all the groups join in one comprehensive movement to get the same information out there. I feel more people would have the capacity to engage if they are not bombarded different resources from different organizations.

My vote would be to act as an arm or extension of whatever program the city/county are planning to use, and bring together/unify the efforts of all groups individuals and organizations interested in helping

Diane, I totally agree with you! What you’ve described is what the team talked about when we met last October. Mac has been our point person through his work with Benton County Health Dept. Hopefully, he’ll be able to give us some guidance on a coordinated approach before he leaves on vacation. I’ll give him a call today.
