Second, I unable to update a firmware that I feel is outdated. If the drive is Ultrium 5 3280 than appropriate update file should be cp031432.exe or cp030021.exe that I was able to obtain from the server SPP disk. Both utilities don't work and end up with message "No operation was performed. You may look at the setup log file for more details if desired.Press the 'Close' button to exit Setup." The log file (located C:\cpqsystem\log) contains just following:
The firmware files extracted from the both utilities all have *.E extension that is not compatible with LTT firmware utility that requires *.FRM extensions for firmware upgrade files. I also is not eligible for the built-in LTT online firmaware procedure that is requires a token for the warranty linked to the product that I obviosuly don't have since I'm even not sure about product name and whether updated firmware exist.
HPE LTT generally will detect most HPE based drives wether it has HPE firmware or not. as for why it doesnt detect the drive in StorageCare im not sure, i havend used it before, it may be the case that it will only detect a drive through a tape library.
The vulnerability has never been exploited. However to make sure our customers are protected, all newly shipped versions of the product contain the update that fixes this issue. He explained that it's not warranty, but that the slot licences on the machine had expired, and in order to add an expansion to the unit, we would need to re-up our license. This would also make the device able to update it's firmware to the newest version.
He then went on to inform me that there's a known exploitable vulnerability in the firmware on our device if it's before a certain version, and in order to "make sure we are safe" we would be required to pay up.
I laughed out loud on the phone, and told him that was an absolutely insane price to pay just to upgrade a single tape changer. Out of curiosity, i asked how often we were expected to renew our licence on the device in order to be "allowed" to expand it and receive updates. Apparently they expect that kind of money every single year, and are more than happy to try and hold you hostage with vulnerable firmware to do so. We never even got a notification of this lapse and assumed the auto-updates were still running.
However, firmware issues are not usually resolved in 5 minutes, so to get things working, I suspect the fastest way will be to put the firmware back to what it was previously (hence why I say to primarily work with Quantum).
So, although my first comments are firmware related, and clearly this is the trigger - it might just be the case that the firmware upgrade has wiped out part of the library config - so, check that the scan -changer shows the drives and serial numbers correctly. If not, you will need Quantum to help configure the drives within the library correctly.
If not resolved take a look at the firmware levels for you HBA and Tape Library, we have seen this behaviour before where the combination of HBA type with the device was the issue. A firmware update might fix the issue.
