Trying to plan some of the activties for our Feb 2010 cruise! one thing my family (all adults) says is a must do is "swim with the dolphins". We are staying on Wakiki for 3 days prior to our cuise. Ive looked at both programs on line but would like to hear if anyone has done the "Royal Dolphin Swim" with Sea life or "Adult or Family swim program" at Dolphin quest and what did you think of it? Both are pricey but since this is a once in a lifetime treat I want to make sure we go to the best one!
I would strongly recommend looking into Dolphin Quest at the Kahala Hotel. Hopefully you can get some recent reviews. The Kahala Hotel is in a beautiful location so you will be able to enjoy a wonderful beach before and after your dolphin swim, and great food and drink. We have also done the dolphin swim at the Hilton Waikoloa on the island of Hawaii and it was fantastic. I can't say how strongly I feel about not going to Sea Life Park and looking into Dolphin Quest. It is such a fun experience if done with the right trainers and in the right environment. And...as you say the experience comes with a $$$price tag and should be an experience to remember. Cherie
We went to Sea Life park on Oahu and did a dolphin swim. It was ..... okay. Very pricey. My husband called it cheese-y and stopped just short of calling it a tourist trap. My kids loved it. All 4 of us got in the water with the dolphins. There were about 20 or 30 of us in the water in a line. The Sea Life employee had the dolphin in front of us, gave a talk, had him swim back and forth. We all got to touch him, we all had to pose for a picture ("look at the camera - smile") Pictures were $16.00 each - ouch, I "had" to buy one of each of us! :) We were in the water, it seems like about 30 minutes.
All in all, I don't think it was a waste - my kids loved it. My, SIL and BIL went with us ... They loved it too. In my opinion I would try to find a different dolphin swim than this one. There's bound to be a better one than Sea Life Park.
The $18 viewing thing is sort of misleading-- I think this is the $18 admission to the Museum of Bermuda in which the Dolphin experience sits. There are a number of area from the Museum you can see into the dolphin pens including a kids playground that is just off to the side of them. If your ship is docked at Heritage Wharf, and it's large enough, you can also see right into the dolphin pens from it.
Of course they are going to claim they are humane and doing great things but bottom line is that dolphins are wild animals. It is not natural for them to be in captivity. Also Dolpin Quest is a profit making busness.
i sat and watched the dolphins with their trainers/caretakers for about an hour and loved it. they take excellent care of the dolphins!!!! The trainers will talk to you and answer any questions. I was very impressed! one was getting its teeth brushed. It was like a big dog just laying on the trainers lap then rolling over. Seemed perfectly happy. They don't make the dolphins do things they don't want to. Really its an amazing place and if you want to get in the water with the dolphins if thats your thing then I would recommend that place as they truly care for them!!!
I'm confused (nothing new there), we go to the museum each visit worth every penny for us. We check out the dolphins and last trip our 88 years old Aunt sat and watched while we walked around she loved it. When I have checked over the years the price has always been close to 300. to go in with the dolphins? What is this $65.00? Maybe I have missed something each time? It has been a few years since I looked at the Bermuda tourist web site.
The Dolphin Quest team is heartbroken over the loss of our beloved Kai, a 22-year-old male dolphin, who died Thursday while in the care of Dolphinaris Arizona. The exact cause of death is unknown at this time pending the results of a post-mortem analysis.

'In spite of their best efforts, the animal health concerns have not been resolved at Dolphinaris. We have a senior marine mammal specialist from Dolphin Quest onsite at Dolphinaris who knows our remaining dolphins well and is closely monitoring them. One of the things I love about the Kahala Hotel & Resort is the dolphins in-residence. Children, including my son, love dolphins and while a guest the Kahala you have a chance to better appreciate their beauty and intelligence in an up-close encounter. Thus, I recommend the Dolphin Quest experience.
Capturing even one wild orca or dolphin disrupts the entire pod. To obtain a female dolphin of breeding age, for example, boats are used to chase the pod into shallow waters, where the animals are surrounded with nets that are gradually closed and lifted onto the boats. Unwanted dolphins are thrown back. Some die from shock or stress, and others slowly succumb to pneumonia when water enters their lungs through their blowholes. Pregnant females may spontaneously abort babies. In one instance, more than 200 panicked dolphins who had been corralled into a Japanese fishing port crashed into boat hulls and each other, becoming hopelessly entangled in nets during their attempt to find an escape route. Many became exhausted and drowned.
About 20 years ago, my sister moved to Southwest Florida, and we visit her fairly regularly. Their house fronts a canal, which flows to a river a mile or so downstream, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico a few miles further down. My brother-in-law used to take us in his boat down to the Gulf, and on the way, wild dolphins and manatees would sometimes come up alongside and ride with us nonchalantly for a bit and show off. Sometimes you could even see one fishing in the canal from her backyard.

When we were in the dolphin lagoon, the beautiful animals and even a baby dolphin, were feeling playful. During our 30 minute in-water encounter, we were able to pet and hug two different dolphins, learn hand signals to encourage them to do tricks, swim with a dolphin, and even give the dolphin a kiss, all while learning more about these incredible creatures!
The five building Dolphin Quest Village was built in 2008 and includes an information and check-in desk, a photo and gift shop, and a learning center where classes are held, as well as the Grand Lanai where you can watch dolphins swimming and playing with each other, and the Encounter Club with interactive exhibits and activities.
