Hi all,

I need help with a 1Tb WD passport external drive. It suddenly stopped working and after researching for a few weeks, came to the conclusion it was suffering from the WD slow drive problem. I arrived here trying to get it to work with the rather excellent HDDSuperTool! Hopefully to fix Mod 02 and clear Mod 32.

I have already swapped the USB board and the BIOS over to a SATA board. I ran HDDSuperTool before and after the swap but got the same result. Seems to end up with a Command Error within the VSC options.

I've tried hiding the drive from Linux, but HDDSuperTool did not see the drive! Tried the temp GRUB libata.force method and the permanent change - no drive was seen.

So has anyone got any ideas how to proceed?

Dump of the HDDSuperTool terminal output for your delight!

Thanks and HELP!!

The drive is most likely SED locked. Those self encrypted drives often lock out access to the modules. It is a multi step process to perform the fix on those, and there is no free tool that can do that.

To simplify it, it would go something like: isolate heads, read rom, patch rom, write patched rom, patch ram, read needed module(s) and use as overlay to gain module write access, perform slow fix, write original rom back, perform recovery. And on top of all that, that can only be done with the SATA board, but the data is encrypted when read with the SATA board. So either you need a way to decrypt the data, or you have to put the USB board back on after the fix.

Not an easy task. I got as far as to read modules in hddsupertool, then gave up as it was already very complicated, and I have no idea about loading the overlays.

Good luck,
Scott
