Hello Harvard China Carers!!!
These are exciting times, as Harvard China Care, only 1.5 years old, has made
significant developments this summer!
Retrospectively, please congratulate yourself for your hard work, that helped us
earn over $30,000 USD last year! Those funds SAVED CHILDREN'S LIVES!!!!
To be exact, the money was spent on 3 major projects:
-heart surgery that saved the life of a little girl named Guo Yan Fei
-establishment of a school for blind orphans in Beijing
-funding the operation costs (food, clothing, nannies' salaries) for an entire
orphanage in Sai Qi, Fujian Province
We also hosted a successful conference in February, where over 30 new college
China Care clubs were born!
Furthermore, one of our corporate sponsors, the Chai-Maginn foundation, has
agreed to fund the establishment of a China Care Children's Home and Medical
program in Jinan, Shandong Province, at the cost of $50,000 USD annually!
We cannot yet rest on our laurels, though, as this year we have several HUGE
tasks ahead of us, that are going to make a massive difference in the lives of
many Chinese orphans.
Harvard China Care has committed to these 3 major responsibilities:
1) Funding the operation costs and coordinating the child sponsorship program
for the Sai Qi orphanage - approximate cost: $24,000 USD annually
2) Facilitating and funding the foster program in conjunction with the Jinan
Children's Home. This project is extremely valuable, as the weakest orphans are
taken into our Children's Homes, but once they have been nursed back to health
by our caring staff, China Care aims to place them in local foster care, so
that they can continue to develop emotionally and mentally, and learn the love
of a family environment. approximate cost: $12,000 USD annually
3) Coordinating another China Care/Harvard China Care conference the weekend of
October 22nd/23rd, 2005, to be hosted at Harvard University. This conference
will be attended by over 100 students, half of which will be starting up new
china care clubs, and the other half from last conference who are returning to
discuss their experiences so far in the China Care world.
In order to accomplish these aims, we are going to need an expanded team of
committed, responsible members this year, who realize the full potential they
have to save these children's lives. This year, our members must also realize
though, that since HCC has assumed this serious responsibilities, we must be
absolutely committed to working hard for our cause, from showing up to our
bi-monthly meetings, to attending fundraisers and brainstorming creative ways
to raise funds for these orphans!
Remember all of the perks that Harvard China Care has to offer, when you decide
whether or not to remain committed to our organization this year. If you are
interested in volunteering next summer in a Chinese orphanage, which so far has
been the experience of a lifetime for every volunteer we have sent, you simply
need to commit to doing your best to help HCC in its mission throughout the
year as well. HCC certainly is not a time-consuming activity - your commitment
is what you make of it, but please we ask that you simply follow through with
whatever commitment you make this year, as the children are depending on you.
Being a Harvard China Care member this year simply requires the following
commitment:
-attendence at a bi-monthly meeting, to be arranged according to a schedule that
satisfies the greatest number of people
-attendence at fundraisers and other activities fairs where we promote the HCC
mission and spread the word about the difference that we are making for these
chinese orphans
-helping out at least once monthly at one of our "Dumplings" playgroups. We only
hold 2 playgroups per month on saturday mornings from 10-12, so this is not a
big time commitment at all, and is generally a lot of rambunctious fun!
-being creative at meetings and helping to come up with innovative ways of
raising funds
If you are still interested in being a Harvard China Care member and would like
to stay on the care-list this year, please email me at
mad...@fas.harvard.edu
before September 8th, confirming your HCC membership. If you would like to be
removed from the list, simply do not reply to this email and you will be
removed on September 8th.
Thank you all again for a fantastic year of growth and prosperity in 2004-2005,
and we're looking forward to working with many of you towards these ambitious
and amazing new goals in 2005-2006!
Sincerely,
Aidan Madigan-Curtis Zhenzhen Lu
