Minutes of the meeting for restructuring the HCA syllabus
I could not attend but had sent the input you gave along with my comments
The Dean welcomed the alumni and thanked them for sparing their valuable time for the consultations. The outline of the proposed course structure was circulated to all the members. Discussion primarily revolved around the list of courses (rather than the detailed contents of each course).
Key suggestions made by the members are as follows:
a) For the courses that are taught together with the MBA (EXE) program, the faculty should be requested to consider 2-3 case studies in health sector (or) 1 or 2 separate classes for MBA (HCA) students to contextualise the course to the health sector. Attending classes with MBA (EXE) students add value to their learning and therefore wherever possible combined classes are welcome.
b) Since this is a niche (sector specific) program, there is no need for optional / electives in the second year
c) Since MBA (HCA) program is to considered as a separate program, ideally the course contents should reflect health sector orientation in terms of units / topics as well as references in the health sector
d) There was a serious debate on the eligibility conditions for admission to the program. Members recommended more stringent criteria- i.e. admission for only those with medical/ clinical degrees (MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS) with 5 years or more experience in hospitals/ health care organisations.
e) Semester wise revised list of courses (please see attached) that has been broadly agreed upon. A seminar Course on "Contemporary Issues in Health Sector" in being introduced to cover a number of topics such as “Digital Technology and Health”, “Patient Centric Care”, “Role of Development Partners in Health”, “Social Determinants of Health”, “Epidemiological Trends and Global Burden of Diseases”, “Business Process Excellence in Hospitals”, “Health Technology Assessment”, etc. These seminar papers will need to have a series of guest lectures coordinated by a FMS faculty member.
I request you and the faculty colleagues to provide your valuable feedback and suggestions. Once we have some consensus on the list of courses, we could then focus on the course contents and the list of references.
With warm regards
Prof. Venkat Raman
