Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to share some information and to ask how your department, School and university would be able to participate and assist in the invitation of Professor Molefi Asante, often referred to as the father of Afrocentricity. As I am researching the life and work of Anton Wilhelm Amo, a Ghanaian who was taken to Holland then to Germany and who was the first African man who went to law School in Europe (1727) and obtained a Phd in Philosophy from Wittenberg, a peer of Leibnitz, AND who wrote on the body . . . it was again to Molefi to who I turned for further assistance; Molefi has been a friend, a comrade and mentor for many years. Prof. Asante has written more than 70 books and he is one of the most astute scholars of African scholarship that I have met in my life. As our students are grappling with ways to weave European Social and Political Thought into their African-based research and having a difficult time because most of them are fully aware of the shortcomings of their Eurocentric analysis,--it is what the old system taught. This is not to suggest that it is irrelevant but rather that we need to find ways to combine, merge and allow European thought to be confronted by African Social and Political Thought. Whilst we try to address this aspect of the work as scholars and researchers and try to set good examples, there are ways in which we can only do "so much." Many of my colleagues talk about their own lack of knowledge on African Social and Political Thought--be this on scholarship and research pertaining to Gender, Philosophy, Politics, Sexuality, Literature, etc . . . Prof. Molefi Asante is an enormous asset to all of us. I am keen in organising a panel, have a number of our peers discuss their work and research on African scholarship and ask Prof. Asante to give the keynote talk, as well as a number of workshops with our students.
Please let me know whether your department, School or University would be interested in hosting and/or co-hosting Prof. Asante in the near future.
Best wishes,
Rozena Maart
