Hi Homebrew!

Just curious if anyone knows of a local supplier for 80 20 or T slot extrusion?  (bonus points if they carry smaller profiles like 20mm, and if they do cut-to-length)

I’m building a frame and need some longer pieces (like 65”) which seems longer than Amazon carries for fast shipping, and 8020.net has good pricing per length and per cut, but longish lead times.

Thanks!
Peter

McMaster has next day shipping and all the sizes you can imagine. Not sure how competitive their pricing is (though it's generally more expensive). I've found their price for extruded aluminum to be pretty fair.

Per the 80/20 website, Fastenal is a distributor. I've never purchased extrusions from them, but generally you can order anything for pickup at a local warehouse with no shipping charge. That has worked well for me. Shipping odd sized items can be expensive and unless packed well, they may be exposed to undesirable forces. Ship a metal rod ... receive a metal pretzel.

https://us.misumi-ec.com ships profiles even in small quantities;-) Are
they cheap? I don't know. But they were one [of the few] suppliers,
which have smaller sizes (15x15 & 20x20 mm ... )

I have currently some 4m long profiles in my cart but did not get around
to ask them, iff they can ship those.

Shipping long items is expensive - we've had to do this for FRC
competition robots when local supplies were unavailable, and the cost
for longer than three foot lengths was huge (like $100 huge).

Local supplier for a lot of metal stock is Metal Werx -
http://www.gorillametals.com/ (yeah, they changed their name but not
their website!)

I don't know if they have what you're looking for, but they may be able
to bring it in cheaper in their truckload deliveries. Their prices are
very reasonable.

Good people there, and yes they will cut most stock to length (if they
bring it in you might have to take it in standard lengths, but they'll
usually still cut it up for you for transit).

One FRC team sent them a huge cutlist - they did it, but they were not
amused (and I don't blame them!). I let them know that our team will
never do that!

We bought ours from Grainger. They have stores around the bay area.

I use a standard aluminum tube sourced locally. I typically have someone waterjet the panels with the clearance holes. Then I just chop saw the tubes to length and assembly with self tapping screws. It is light and rigid.

Great, thanks for weighing in everyone!  I was able to find profile locally at MSC and Fastenal.

It seems a lot more places locally stock 1”, so I’m just going to switch the frame to that to make things simpler in the future for when I need long pieces quickly.  (Another one I found that carries this for a good price is Teco)

Best,
Peter

Peter,
here is an alternative aluminium extrusion suitable for smaller robots and other projects
Their 10mm and 15mm extrusions are perfect for tabletop robots.

I learned about it when I met the founder of that company at Maker Faire about 10 years ago.
